Test Drive Unlimited

With the game taking place in Hawaii you would think that we would have the game all over the place. But so far I haven't found it yet. Tommorrow is more promising....

Yahoo! Games - 4 out of 5
Official Xbox Magazine UK - 9 out of 10
Edge Magazine UK - 8 out of 10

looking good so far. Lets hope the game sells well and keeps atari alive. Would be a real shame to see such a brand go down :(

... you're joking right? The company that is now called Atari has nothing to do with the company that gave us Atari hardware decades ago. Infogrames or whatever it was called bought the Atari name a few years ago and has released nothing but license-based shit since they did, knowing that the Atari name and whatever license the games were based on would keep them afloat for a long time.
We have to thank them for gems like Enter the Matrix and loads of games based on huge movie and other licenses.

Yep. The Atari name has changed hands several times, but the actual company died in '96. Infogrames changed their name to benefit from the iconic reputation of Atari I expect.

And it worked big time. I think people are realising that their games are pure shite though and started staying away.

Funny enough they have their UK office in my same building... Bunch of wannabe geeks... All caught up in their own licenses and this stereotypical London trendy attire so much it makes me vomit.

Only LB...hahahaha Go Atari!

Hehehe I'm good.

But really, you know those kind of people who really try very hard to be geeks... They idolize The Geek but fail miserably, getting their very superficial "knowledge" from magazines (*shiver*) or IGN...

They all have marketing qualifications and sell their products as such: marketing products. Not games, they are just products to sell a certain license and make money. The fact that the games aren't actually good to play doesn't matter, cause they work for Atari (ooooooh!) and they will still go home every night to their Camden flat, shared with a couple of people they don't even know, and get stoned to death, all the time thinking they are oh so trendy! As a result we get things like Enter the Matrix or Driv3r... *cringe*

Really, it gives me irritable bowel syndrome just thinking about it.

Am I sensing a bit of jealousy?;)

Seriously though this trend of selling products instead of games is disturbing. Yesterday I went to the store and all they had were groceries.

Framerate is stable 40-50, not vsynced. 2x AA (i think) no AF. Native 720p

There was something mentioned about "fully operational vsync", is it an option? I'd take 30 with in a heartbeat.

What i dont understand is the 2x AA thing. Don't you need to tile anyway to use 2x AA at 720p? If your tiling anyway, tile dammit and do 4x!

EDIT: Any mention of wheel support for this game?

Anyway, I'm enjoying Test Drive a lot, been playing since yesterday morning. So much more to do than in the demo, and obviously much more distinct landscapes... :)

Well Fake Atari did sell UT2004. So it's not all complete trash. :) I still remember buying the collector's edition and looking forward to the "exciting" sticker supposedly in the box. I was imagining some sweet Unreal logo sticker, but instead I got a useless Atari sticker and threw it away. Heh

it has wheel controls in the options out of the box.

the game is not technically perfect for sure, but for my tastes its the basis of what future car games should be.
good game!

Any indication if that is with force feedback for the new MS wheel or just generic 3rd party wheel support?

I am pasting my reply from the testdrive forum, since they asked how accurate the game was...

There are some missing things and some wrong things. Parts of Nimitz runs under H1 yet it doesn't seem to ingame. The road signs that tell you where things are don't exist in the mass quantity that they are found ingame. Pearl Ridge mall, which is over by the stadium, is missing, right along with Loves Bakery. Hickam AFB is missing (which is odd since most of the flight line is actually Hickam's). The road on the upper left side of the island (the part where the pic of the light house is) isn't paved and in most cases cars can't actually drive through (been this way for a very long time). The road starts again in Mokuleia (which is near Dillingham Airstrip). There is more beach than what they show ingame. The Leeward side of the island isn't nearly as green as they show ingame. While the floating debris is a nice touch, it would have been more accurate to use sea salt spray, especially since we don't have lots of leaves blowing around, and you don't see newspaper blowing around either. As I drive around more I will add any new impressions.

Personal opinions of the present owners aside, it would still be sad to see such a long lived brand die completely. Even if it's soul died long ago.

Well personally i'd have preferred to leave on a high and not having my name used for scum, but maybe it's just me...

You worked for old-atari?

Out of interest I had a look through gamespot's review records. Not the best source, but they allow publisher sorting, and have a pretty good database.

It's very hit and miss since the takeover. There is a lot of middle-of-the-road stuff, yet there is still still the odd standout title in there. Over the last 2 years, their average is 6.6, not great by gamespot standards. Thats for unique 48 reviewed titles, 16 of which are 7.5+, including odd ones like pirates! getting 9.2. However, further back you also get utter disasters like this :runaway:, mixing in with the likes of CivIII...
I see what you mean about the licensed games though, the number of dragon ball Z games is... er... scary. But then again a surprising number (sans previous example) don't do too badly.

It was sortof sad in a way. When sorting by review score, lowest first, it lists all the oldtime games from way back. Sigh. So many classics :(

The only potential hit on the horizon I see is the new alone in the dark game (which looks very good). There is also bullet witch, which given they are apparently significantly reworking (extra ~5 months) after it's rushed release in japan, could be a sleeper hit.
