Tecmo's Tomonobu Itagaki disappointed

I don't know if its just me but this guy is one cocky son of a b****. I don't really think its good for him to talk about other devs like this in the public. I know he can get the phone number to these guys offices, so why not talk about it in private. It's becoming apparent that Itagaki is one of the biggest developer fanbois for MS.

Dead or Alive 4 Producer Tomonobu Itagaki has expressed concern over current Xbox 360 efforts from Japanese developers.

Itagaki explained during an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu that, after seeing other Japanese Xbox 360 games at E3, he came away disappointed with his contemporaries' efforts.

"They are supposed to be software makers that represent Japan," Itagaki proclaimed. "I wonder if they have any pride? Given the world's strongest console, I was hoping to see some amazing graphics [from other Japanese developers], but I saw nothing.

"Some developers may be wondering what in the world I am saying, but they should bring something that's better than what I've made. I'm saying this from the kindness of my heart. If this continues, we'll really lose to America."

So what do you guys think?

Sorry if this has been talked about before

The producer of dead or alive 4 is getting pissy about other developers not meeting his graphical standards?

From the screenshots I saw (and the HD video), dead or alive 4 doesn't look all that outstanding. It looks 'okay'. Granted, I have yet to see what other japenese developers have in store for Xbox2, but if he's claiming that his is the best... They really are doomed on the Xbox2.

I hope he doesn't think hes an excellent example of a japanese game developer.

You know what bobbler I think he does think that. I think he's saying that out of all Japaneese devs his game looked the best on the X360. I seriously can't remember all of the japan made games but I could have sworn some others were better.

I wonder what jvd has to say about this, being that his more into the X360 than I'm. I'm still shocked that he said this to a public MS website.

He didn't, he said it to Famitsu..

I've also read other interpretations that he was talking about xbox 1..

If he was infact talking about Xbox1 then that makes sense -- he was about the only japanese developer for it that got anywhere and Xbox was the strongest console this generation. It makes a lot more sense, actually.

What I saw of DOA4 looked like it could be done on the current Xbox platform.

I wonder if this was a case of a game that started it's development cycle on Xbox, then was decided to move it to X360?

TECMO games are graphically among the best of the current generation. If they really get going and push the 360 hardware out of the gate with DOA4 like they did on Xbox with DOA3, we will see a ton of improvment before that game shipps.

Well five days old so.. :? But thanks for the rest Alstrong

And the rest is quite interesting.

Itagaki also goes into lengthy dialogue about the art of high definition, revealing that he'd like to deliver the game's trailer on a high definition medium, but that DVD isn't meant for high resolution, Blu-ray hasn't reached popularity and D-VHS is completely dead (he doesn't mention HD-DVD). The situation, according to Itagaki, is different from listening to Beethoven on cassette. In the case of games, which are meant to be interactively played on a television, you're losing quite a bit when viewing a low resolution trailer. Itagaki suggests that those who have high end computers download the game's trailer in full form.

Finally, it wouldn't be an Itagaki interview without comments on other developers. Rather than speaking about specific developers, Itagaki states that the entire Japanese game development community seems to be unhealthy based on their showing at E3. He asks, "At a time when such an awesome machine is appearing, why aren't you trying harder? Aren't you the software makers that represent Japan?".

Itagaki seems to be drumming up 360 support as he adds, "I was hoping to see what kind of beautiful scenes you could make for the world's most powerful game machine, but there was absolutely nothing. There are probably some developers who read this and say 'What's this fool talking about?'. In that case, you should bring forward something more exceptional than what I've made."

Dead or Alive 4 is, according to Itagaki, 15% complete. While he won't give a specific launch date for the game, he does mention that there's very little development time left. Perhaps the second Xbox console will debut in Japan just like the first one, with a DOA game.

Very interesting indeed. I talks about high-def, killing Japan's support for pretty 360 showings at E3, states that his game is 15% complete, and that very little development time is left.

Hmmm....

He would have a point about the Xbox.

If he is talking abou Xbox 360... DoA4 may or may not be a port or unfinished, but what was shown is blah. Yeah, it looks nice and runs smooth. But defniately nothing special graphically. I would consider it a lower end next gen title graphically. Part of the problem is the art direction... but still, looking at the food in the market made me laugh. It could not be too much of a load to make some real apples now would it?

This guy is hilarious, and loves to talk trash whenever possible. http://xbox.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3140456&did=9

Here's an interview he did with 1up about Ninja Gaiden Black. Some highlights:

The lowest difficulty will be called Ninja Dog. While it is a mode intended for casual gamers, it is not Easy Mode. Not being able to beat the game on Normal means that you are a failure as a Ninja, but not that you are a failure as a gamer, right? Ninja Dog is for those players. . .

there are some people who want to beat the game, even if it means being reduced to the level of a dog; people who are not afraid to shame themselves to accomplish their goals.

1UP: What do you think of the Dynasty Warriors series?

TI: As a real man, I find no feeling of achievement in beating up millions of defenseless enemies. As for my opinion as a gamer, my free time is too valuable to spend it hacking away at an endless stream of dumb-as-a-brick opponents.

There's lots of other good stuff in there as well, including him at a bar talking trash to the director of Devil May Cry 3.

To keep this on topic though, it doesn't surprise me to hear this sort of thing from Itagaki. He's known for mouthing off a lot it seems. I say good for him. He's proven that he can deliver with Ninja Gaiden. He earned his right to speak his mind.

The guy has the right to talk shit, who care after the master piece that was ninja gaiden I don't care what he says, it doesn't matter what system NG2 appears on if he wants to talk, let him talk.

We all know were mckmas8808 loyalty lies, I might be new to the boards but I have been lurking here for some time now, don't worry mckmas8808 there's a chance that NG2 will appear on PS3, and then you can kiss his ass.

Yeah you're right you are new to the boards. Take a look at about 5 other forums and see what others are saying. Matter of fact look at this thread right here. Why pick me out of everybody when I said the exact damn thing that others have said so far. The man has the right to speak just like any human does, but to say the stupid a$$ comment like "I expected more graphically from Japanese devs" is stupid.

Look at the damn game does it look that good? NO!! Everyone here can see that. He said the game is 15% finished so yes I think the game will look much better when released. Read some more my young apprentice you will see that I have praised the MS and Nintendo when needed. ;)

But honestly comparing Ninja Gidian to God of War to me is a wash. So can the makers of GoW be able to talk crap about anybody at will? I don't think so. Many people in this world honestly believes that God of War is just as good as NG.

Still doesn't change the fact that Tomonobu Itagaki was being very, very arrogant. Why did you have to even bring that up Deathstar?

OFF TOPIC

Actually Mckmas8808, deathstar121 has a very good point. The dribble you post on various forums is getting a little old now, but I still read it for the amusement.

ON TOPIC

Itagaki has every right to complain about Japanese developers because it's true. Most of the developers seem to go out of their way to avoid making games for MS. That's ok in my book because it just opens the door for western developers, as well as others. MS has succeeded, and will continue to do so with our without their support.

As for E3, I was there and what I saw from the Japanese developers was absolutely boring IMHO.
