UPDATE 4PM(GMT) 24/04/09

REGARDING THE XBOX 360 VERSION OF THIS DLC

The internet is awash with reports that the Xbox 360 title update released this morning for Street Fighter IV has broken the game’s online modes.

Attempting to get into an online game after installing the patch results in a screen informing players that there are no available sessions, with users unable to create their own sessions either. It affects all of Street Fighter IV’s online game modes, including Ranked, Player and Championship matches.

The PS3 version is reportedly unaffected.

I finally bought the Super rendition of SF IV.
Really a great game, plenty of characters, lot of dept. It's a bit sad that the trials overall do a really bad job at teaching you timings and what to do with one character.

One question what are your favorite characters? I used to play Ken and Ryu a lot (haven't touched a SF game since... SF2'turbo thingy... ), surprisingly I'm no lnger interested in those characters they are powerful but it feels old.
Out of all the characters I particularly enjoy Juri.

Well I main Bison and my secondary is Guile, but since Arcade Edition came out I have been playing with Yun.

I've become pretty bad and Bison (which is the Juri's next to last encounter) gives me serious headache even in "medium" difficulty.
I saw some online rankings (not the newest tho) and Bison and Guile are doing pretty well (top 5), I was surprised to find Honda. Juri is pretty abysmal in this regard, may be I should not spend to much time on that character but I like a play style (even though I'm not even close use her properly, Feng Shui Engine is still for me mostly a mystery). She's a hell lot of fun fun but I can already tell that she lacks an invincibility move (at least when the move trigger), it can be bothering to pressure characters that have one (numerous form of shoriuken, and other moves). It hurts while fighting Bison which moves tends to have priority against hers. I guess I'll have to make no mistake and keep pressuring him the best I can as countering is not that efficient (his double scissor is "safe" it ends out of reack for me to grab or to fight back with a powerful move).
Then there is Seth which is imho a hack but a bit less bothering.

I may buy the Arcade Edition online but it won't be now I've barely played with every characters and not even scratching the surfaces of what are their respective play styles, pro/con, etc.. I read there are some fixing on some existing character including Juri, who knows I may have a GAS surge soon enough.

Overall having being disconnected for so long I'm impressed by the improvement Capcom introduced to the game :D

EDIT by the way I found this person youtube account and it's full of win explain how to use Juri, I can see practice coming.

Tier list for characters only matter when you are playing with someone who has a skill level similar to yours. I used to play with El Fuerte who was shit in SF4 (but quite good in SSF4) and still manage to win.

The thing is, tier list depends on the Win/loss ratio of characters in tournaments and this is also one reason why the less popular characters end up lower than they should on the list cause barely anyone uses them....this is why the tier list in Japan is somewhat different from the one in NA.

Interesting :)

I've found this and I believe that I'll do great progresses :) This guy makes a hell of a good job to explaining the game "jargon" as well as some tricks. It's a must for somehow new players like me:

The vid 4 on buffering got me angry of the time i lose frenetically squeezing my pad

EDIT I spend a few time reading at the shoriuken forum and it appears Juri is pretty well loved in Japan. There are also a lot of information about the game mechanics, it's crazy complex. Damned how Capcom can release something so complicated and go away with such a shitty manual and trials?
For the character I use I did not find much shortcut, and I still consistently miss Supra and ultra (the 360 does not help for sure).

Quick question for 360 players: about the pad.
Which lay out do you use for the pad?
I use the standard A lay out, but I wonder about going more custom like having light punch and kick as well as fierce punch and kick on the facade button.

Do you use the stick or the pad? I'm more successful with shoriuken on the pad but for everything else I do better with the analogue stick.

Wow I've been playing more of the game mostly off-line so against AI and I've to admit that this game is too fucking hardcore for me. I played a bit with friends but we're only scratching the surface of the game.

If I had to made a review of this game I'm not sure I would rate as high as reviews did. There are next to no option for off line tournaments, the game makes an awful job at teaching you even basic combo. I had to create an account on the shoryuken forum and watch a tutorial on youtube (made by a SRK members) to grasp the basis of the game. Even though getting the timing for combo is close to full time job. The difference between linked and chained combo is a split second, but really a split second tough as putting a coma in a triplet at a decent bps. I quit the series really early and onward switch to tekken (1&2 I know I quit gaming for a long time) I had no idea it turned out this hardcore/exclusive, and it's not the most technical SF out there. tekken timing were so much more relaxed (at least back in time) and the game did a good job at helping you learning those timing.

Then there is the controller I found that I may pull out some combo if I tap the buttons with my right hand (so holding the controller with one hand) which is basically useless and for trials only as 2 buttons (at least) are unaccessible doing so. To achieve anything worth it you have to invest into a specific controller. I'm looking forward to hitbox thingy and at which price madcatz and the like can put the thing out.

Then comes Capcom update policies which is imho dreadful. Characters get fixed from SF4 to SSF4 to SSF4 AE but only in the new version which basically means that you have to pay for the new versions no matter you're not interested in the new characters, as it not only balancing acts but also fixing bugs (like not proper hit boxes on some specials etc.) it's basically asking costumers to pay for patches mostly... I despise this commercial practice, it will be a long while since I give Capcom some extra money, I'll buy their games second hand and innerly smile in the process to such assholes. Not too mention that for online players as version are not inter-operable the upgrade to a new version is even more of a forced hand deal.

Overall I still miss proper, at least a bit "casual tolerant" fighting game. Tekken is boring me now, I've never been into soul calibur, MK or DoA series and all others Capcom games are every bit as hardcore as SSF4 or more.

So back to a mini-review idea I would warn consumer about the really (but really) hardcore nature of the game, strongly criticize the lack of off-line gaming options a, crush Capcom dreadful didactic approach of the game and be even more vocal about Capcom patching attitude/strategy.
Overall a 7 for anyone a 9 for "tough-core" and fans.
I feel like Capcom has in the same time revived the genre and set it up for others years of oblivion.

EDIT I would also add that I hate Capcom approach about balancing characters. I get your point Night shade in regard to "tiers characters" still Capcom make a pretty bad job at balancing character imho. It's like the "game theory" (and the simplest form where we consider a zero-sum games what you gain is lost to your encounter) some characters have free bet, either safe on block, or have bets that breaks the "rock paper scissor" approach as one (or more) of their option beats more than one of your (on wake up or during pressure for example). So to win you need to make more "good" bets. Point is it's deceiving game as stats will kill you in the long run. Hardcore fans are perfectly happy with it which I don't get honestly (either they don't get the nature and theory behind the bet they are doing).
