As for going back to save Newt, it could have been some other reason as well, that's easy. For instance, the switch which will release whatever explosive material needed to start the chain reaction, or whatever blah. If Newt wasn't there, the movie could have been the coolest, scariest thing ever. This way it is only almost the coolest, scariest thing ever
Everyone would be saying how stupid it was because they have a military ship in orbit and they have to go into the reactor to flip a switch in order to blow it up?
Plus remember the reactor was damaged during the original scout mission. They idea was that everyone wanted to get off the planet because the reactor was going to blow anyway, they had no dropship handy, yet Ripley went back into the reactor to find Newt. You had to have a pretty strong reason to do that, and Ripley going back to rescue her substitute-daughter rings a lot more true than a lame "we must manually blow up the <whatever> and save the planet, despite the fact we have a fully armed assault ship in orbit."
Really, I'm no fan of kids in adult films, but Cameron really did it well with Aliens, and in doing so managed to give the characters some real depth and understandable motivation for doing what they are doing. It's just a real pity that all this character development was cut from the theatre release, so only the fans who have seen the director's cut actually know why going back to rescue Newt actually rings true in the film.
