Star Citizen, Roberts Space Industries - Chris Roberts' life support and retirement fund [2012-]

You could make the argument that at least with NMS, you have a fucking game to play. :p

The various pieces of SC shown are looking good, but that there still isn't a game after all this time is distressing.

I think that Crusader will be very playable this year. Squadron 42 is also likely to come soon.

"JPEG ships". Are you a Derek Smart or Something Awfull guy. Because these are their typical sayings.
I can fly many of these ships already. 3 ships came alone with 2.5 PTU. And all ships can be purchased ingame with ingame money.

By the way many poeple got Star Citizen and Sqadron 42 for 25 USD. That will worth more than 3 games.

Yes, everything will be great "soon" with star citizen
For the sake of argument, let's assume all ships are flyable, why do you think nms is expensive when ship median price (eyeball only) is 125$

Screens from the ships and the new Bloom/Flare tech.

Looks like you were for too long in Goons or Elite Dangerous' Star Citizen thread.

MMOs need money. I prefer the option to optionally pay for ships with a high asset quality than a subscribing pay wall like in many other MMOs.

That doesn't even change the fact that Star Citizen would not run on console CPU/APU. NMS sometimes hits 14fps on PS4. And thats more a singleplayer game than an MMO.

I don't know these two places, I think I can express opinions of my own without being labeled.
Your price comparison with NMS is dumb, that's all. One is a game, is out, the other is a work in progress demo.
And no, I wouldn't dare calling the current PTU an "MMO", that's quite a big stretch.
Remind me how many players can play at once currently ?
Anyway, this is futile, you'll wait a bit, then resume your disguised advertisement

I would have believed you but you've used this typical "JPEG phase". This unmasked you.

24 players and 24 ships which can be as large as a CoD or Reinbow Six multiplayer map with millions of polygons. Much larger ships will follow.

By the time Star Citizen releases years from now, if that even happens, there will be new consoles anyway.

Jupiter how new are you to gaming? Have you not done this "follow the PR" thing before and been horribly disappointed? Why do you feel like helping them sell potential vaporware? You should get them to hire you as PR as I think you'd be an asset to them. ;)

Enjoing videogames since 1995. Mech Warrior 2 was the first game I have played.

I met Chris Roberts at Gamescom 2013. I have spoken with him and he also convinced me.
In addition I talked in the recent years with employees via Discord, forums etc./ read their comments/opinions.

This is the project which I imagined long time ago. Some kind of Star Wars universe and Battlestar Galactica experience. What No Man's Sky cant deliver in my opinion.
Thanks to the resources, the talented employees and the fans who have an influence on the development, I am sure that it will be a success.

By the way. They have a truly CRYENGINE expert working on their procedural planet tech. Just look what Corbetta has done 2009:

I suppose that even the procedural planet tech will be very good.

A true believer. Trust in the Chris, man. He's looking out for you too.

Why is his opinion of the game and his dedication to providing updates here so offensive to you all? There's no need to reassert your own opinion everytime he makes a new post. For those who are at least interested in the progress, keep your repetitive comments to yourself or make a dedicated thread to snark in instead. At least with your own thread with a catchy title, you'll still be able to make sure all those innocent gamers out there won't be caught giving money to Loki himself.

Seconded. While I'm a cynical £25 backer and ED fanboy, I really appreciate Jupiter's info dumps.

I only jumped back when NMS was criticized, which is ridiculous considering the state this game is in.
Anyway I rest my case, let the infodump monologue resume

ATV TLDR (Too Long; Didn't Read)

Behind the Scenes: NPC (Interview)

  • NPCs are planned to be released in 2.7, late 2016.
  • Initially they will be in limited numbers but this will increase.
  • They will start with being shopkeepers, store patrons, maintenance workers, entertainers, tourists and vagrants - among others.
  • Will be found in larger landing zones.
  • Aiming to fine tune performance, animation quality and usable functionality with focus on diversity of actions.
  • First wave of NPCs won’t be talkative.
  • Gameplay systems are linked with Subsumption - allowing conversations to branch based on reputation in an area, personal history and tasks.
  • Goal is for system to be dynamic.
  • Plan to have dynamic NPC schedules so during the day the streets are filled with shoppers and workers whereas at night streets are filled with entertainers, drunks, criminals, etc.
  • Will factor in macro system-level events - recessions will lead to more poorer characters or begging while economic boom will lead to more rich people. If there is a war, then there will be more marines or hurt people, busier hospitals, etc.
  • Hiring crew is seen as an important aspect - allows for solo players and small groups of friends.
  • Crew members won’t arrive in 2016.
  • Landing zones will have personnel offices where NPCs can be hired.
  • Crew members will have a daily salary and a skillset.
  • Crew members will have attributes that determine how good they are at a given skill, and how good they can ever be at a given skill.
  • Crew members will also have psychological attributes like aggression and intelligence.
  • Most NPCs will be specialists with only a single focus - there will be exceptions.
  • You can assign NPCs with relevant skills to relevant tasks throughout a ship.
  • It may be worthwhile to stick with a not-so-accurate gunner with lots of potential than a good gunner that won’t ever improve further.
  • NPCs can also be recruited through meeting and engaging with NPCs on your travels, depending how your interactions go.
  • Keeping track of your crew will be done via the mobiGlas - where you can see your NPCs, their wages, assignments and performance.
  • Initially crew members will be able to operate scanners and weaponry, serve as security or as engineers.
    • Eventually more complicated tasks like piloting will be possible.
    • They aim to make the crew controllable in broad strokes - there shouldn’t be much micromanagement.
    • Most of the time you’ll only have to hire a NPC and assign them to a ship.
  • Some crew will require more interaction, like the pilot for example. Engineers may be prioritized so you can control which components get repaired first.
  • Larger crewed ships will be able to be hired in bulk at the personnel office.
    • This will allow larger ships to feel occupied if they need many dozens of crew members.
    • You’ll be able to hire full crews or skeleton crews with varying levels of competence.
    • This allows jobs like cooks and janitors to be hired en masse while specialists can be manually chosen.
  • Senior crew members are an enhancement of your character and ship - they want these characters to matter and due to the difficulty of replacing them, may be allowed to come under extended insurance policies.

Very informative and yes, this is the summary version from what Tony Zurovec has said. ^^ I think it's good that everything was explained detailed in a relatively compact way. In comparison to Chris Roberts he is more focused.

If I copied some texts like this TLDR I mark them with their source. Nevertheless, it still consumes my time. If you get too much upset, I can stop.
I think that it can not hurt you to have the main outline with minimal downtime.

Agreed regarding NMS. I was more commenting in general to the usual suspects. NMS shouldn't even appear in this thread.

There is a difference between purchasing and backing. You can also try to get your money back. A lot of people who tried it again got theirs in the last month.

Although those people do not understood Crowdfunding in my point of view.

If I'm funding the game instead of pre-purchasing it, when will I get my shares of benefits ? :p

Reverse The Verse TLDR(Too Long;Didn't Read)
  • Gamescom is next week with the livesteam starting Wednesday.
  • Friday will be the party and it will be streamed as well.
  • There will be no ATV or RTV next week.
  • Free Fly Starts next week featuring the Mustang Gamma, Sabre, And Freelancer
  • Weekly News letter has also been revamped so check that out as well.
Chris Smith
  • Has done the 300i, Hornet & variants, M50, Mustang, Scout, and Constellation with Josh Coons.
  • He was very excited to work on the F7A Hornet because he could do what he couldn't three years ago.
  • With the way the pipeline is now, he was able to make the ship look better while being more efficient and use less resources.
  • Some of the improvements will transfer over to the original Hornets when they get reworked which is planned.
  • 300i series will also be allegedly reworked by Chris Smith himself.
  • Chris Smith's current project is the Constellation Aquila. The other variants will come later, but that's his current project.
Tony Zurovec
  • For Tony, he stresses the importance of how you design a game. For him, it's about long term gains instead of short term ones. Building out the foundations now gives you the ability to relax later on because you have all the tools, He sited Amazon as a good example of long term investment now paying off and look at how well they're doing and how they're able to relax more because their infrastructure is built and etc.
  • The pipeline for ships as an example is in great shape and they're able to push a lot more ships through in a shorter time frame while being visually better looking and more efficient.
  • The feature that excites Tony the most isn't a feature, but rather a breadth of features coming online that enable the player to choose many different paths. Do you want to be a pirate? Okay, well then you'll have to deal with security, mercenaries, etc. If you're mining, do you play it safe or go risky? Then the pirates can hijack the miners and the cycle begins and creates a dynamic universe that changes daily.
  • NPC Crewman will be straightforward in terms of their implementation, they're an extension of the ship, but NPC's that give missions for example could lie to you and send you to an asteroid belt that was told to hold great riches, but in reality is a pirate trap.
Editors Note: Added Clarification.
  • Offship crew Unattended ships doing their own sorties is something they're not looking into for the near future or even launch. They aren't interested in having people hire NPC's to do their bidding out of sight because then it becomes a different game that they're not looking to have, and it also takes away the impact CIG wants the game to have.
