Sony to outsource RSX fabrication to TSMC & IBM?

And which next-gen console is currently thought to have a significant cost to produce edge at this time?

The one built by a company with no manufactoring of it's own.

Sure, there are unrelated reasons for that. But it says a lot.

Of course you would say there are unrelated reasons, which wouldn't be saying enough.

The console thought to have a significant production cost edge is largely so because of the choice of components, not because of manufacuring practices (or lack of).

But personally, I wonder if Sony could scrap all their fabs with no repercussions, if they wouldn't do it? I tend to think the idea would be appealing to them, though they'd never admit it.

I doubt Sony is ever going to manufactore things as cheap as Taiwain and China does. Unless they build there. Even then I wonder if the investment is worth probably dwindling savings over what TSMC, and dedicated fabs, can do for you.

Well, Sony is set to invest about $3 billion more into their fabs in the next couple of years, so I'm thinking that no - they probably aren't thinking they'd be better off without the fabs.

Graphics companies are not inherently PC or console based. They're just the companies who have the expertise in real-time rendering and are the ones who could be contracted for any potential market.

yes TSMC has a SOI at 90nm. So does IBM.

NO TSMC does not have a SOI process at 90nm, they wont even have SOI with the first 65nm process (planed for december 2006) but only with theire updated 65nm process that will introduced some time in 2007.
