Sony ships 90M PS2s, 27mo quicker than PS

Could Nintendo become second in worldwide sales after all when they support GameCube for a few more years? IMHO, the current market still has some potential, so maybe if Nintendo tries a 'second life' campaign with an even more agressive pricepoint and line-up.

Sure of course why not? Rev is backwards compatible with GCN games, so the GCN software market will continue to sell. A couple of high profile games for GCN next year should do the trick.

I am wondering... Microsoft will cease Xbox production soon (not like they produced that much the last half year/year), so stocks will soon be depleted/removed.

Well they're going to have to soon whether they want to or not since NV stopped producing NV2As last month...

2003/05/15 "PlayStation 2" [SCPH-50000] introduced (RRP 25,000 Yen)
Right, but you can't just count every PS2 sold from the moment of the 50k was introduced unless we know it instantly replaced the older model in all production plants AND that had no more units in the production cycle.

Going by straight math off the charts can be a bit hard. Heck, even the 16.15 million number they mention is hard to codify just by release dates considering that the date Sony was at 74 million (9/30) was just over a month before the 70k was launched.

You said it with such confidence, though, that I figured you had pulled the info straight from a press release of some sort. Otherwise, it takes a bit more analysis and "best guess" approximations.

are those new pstwos or the last revision of the ps2 ? They did a revision like 7 months before the pstwo launched . Dunno , i'm sure we will get better numbers in a few months

That's already been bantered about above, guys. First off, the 50000 model was introduced almost a year and a half before the 70000 (though the timetables of retail availability are different from country to country), secondly they don't separate other model change numbers (such as going from the 10000 to 30000) with the PS2 nor noted anything but PS One sales within the overall PS1 market, and thirdly it is the 70000 model that is listed as "New Platstation 2" in all their launch timetables as well as the bottom remark on the shipment numbers.

It may be hard to pull absolute specifics off the chart, but it would make no sense to think that only 16 million of their past ~40 million sales were 50k and 70k units, and that interpreting the charts with counter-examples would make more sense than one fitting both a pre-established pattern and specific terminology.

Its pretty obvious that they were talking about the slim-lines.
