Tokyo - Next-generation game consoles already are knocking on our doors, but Sony's Playstation 2 is still selling like hotcakes. The company announced that it has shipped more than 90 million units since it went on sale in March of 2000.

Microsoft aims for the top-spot with its upcoming Xbox 360. But kicking Sony from the first rank will be not an easy task, considering sales figures of the Playstation 2 (PS2) released today. According to Sony Computer Entertainment (SCEI), the PS2 passed the 90-million mark on June 2 and is well on its way to surpass the original Playstation, which has sold more than 100 million times to date.

Compared to its predecessor, the PS2 is selling in an accelerated pace. The 90-million mark was reached 27 months quicker. A major contributor to the success was the introduction of the slim-line PS2 in November of last year, Sony said.

The link has the rest of the story.

Yeah and its obvious that the PS2 can easily sell up to 150 million units. The price is still $149, just imagine when the price falls to $129 or $99. This news proves the power and influence of the Sony brand and shows that for the competition its a up hill battle not the other way around.

16.1 million slim-line PS2s is almost more than 4 years worth of GCs and Xboxs.

let them sell 90m then we can talk about it selling 150 million units

Shipped does not equal sold

Its easily possible for them to sell 150 million units. Unlike the competitors Sony's consoles are set up to sell for 10 years. They sold around 35% if not more of the PS1 after the huge price drop and redesign. If the PS2 did what the PS1 did 27 months earlier explain to me why it can't.

Anyways Sony will probably hit 100 million shipped by the end of this year so the way I see it 90 million sold would have been reached by then. I think you don't respect how many units something is shipped. It does actually mean something. Sony won't ship them if they couldn't sell them.

Easily?

It is possible, but it surely won't be easy matey.

Are you implying that they won't sell?

they might not i don't know , what i'm implying is a 150 million sold is not easy for them to do , they are not at 90m sold yet .

Good grief man, you think MS can sell 10m X360 units in a couple of months this year if they wanted, yet you think Sony "might not" be able to sell the few million more it'll take to get them to 90m?

Blinkered!

I don't know about 150m units, but I think PS2 will certainly exceed PSone sales. When all is said and done, Sony will likely have more marketshare coming out of this gen than last, which is very impressive given the competition they've been up against over the last 5 or so years.

I honestly don't know , i odn't know how the x360 , ps3 and revolution will affect the ps2 sales . How can i say sure it will when I don't know how those factors will affect it ?

Now on 150 i doubt it , thats another 60 million units in 5 years or so , in another 2 years the system will be selling very slowly and 3 years after ps3 launch u wont be able to find new units .

That's true. They aren't at 90 million. However, though, they have already sold about as many slim units as the Gamecube has in almost triple the time. To add to that, unlike the other competing units, this console will have a life spand of 10 years, just like the original PlayStation, before it is ever pulled from markets shelves. It took less than 10 years for the original PlayStation to sell 100 million units. If the numbers for this particular unit is already trouncing those of the previous console in double the time, what makes you think a measly 90 million units won't sell before the year is out? There's still five years left. Unless some major manufacturing problems come up before that time, I honesly don't see why this console wouldn't hit the 100 million mark before the year closes out.

Sorry can you post numbers showing they sold 18 million slim ps2 units ?

Anyway as i've already said many people will buy a ps3 which can play ps2 , psone games , when users need to buy a new ps2 because thier old ones don't work (and some of the units are 5 years old now so don't give me bs l-b ) they will ove on . As I said we don't know the new systems will affect the ps2 sales to claim they can easily hit 150 is pure fanboism .

For all we know in 2007 the ps3 and x360 can be in a price war and already be down to 150$ , how would that affect sales ?

How would the rev at 150$ in 2007 or so affect sales ?

Its hard to sit and claim they cna easily sell another 60 m units when they haven't even sold the 90m they have shipped so far

I don't agree that 150m units will be sold, but I am certain PS2s will still be selling beyond PS3's release, at least based on historical precedent. I worked in retail for a number of years, and we sold a bunch of PSones (relatively speaking, for a "dead" system), after PS2 was sold. It was much cheaper for a long time, and many people picked one up for younger kids - and of course, a dance mat craze sold a bunch more too over a couple of Holidays (here in Europe anyway). EA were still putting games out on it till only a couple of years ago!

Hey i never said it would stop selling , I said i didn't think 150 was going to happen . I think it can sell mabye another 30m units , i'm sure this xmass will be a great year for it though it seems to have manufacturing problems as we only get 1 a mont h at out store

It's silly to bandy about an arbitrary "150 million" number at this point, and just as silly to take the bait for it.

The thread topic contains the news; everything else is just conjecture.

Let's just acknowledge that PS2 has been a crazy-selling little machine and move on, all right? :)

But how many people bought more than one PS2?! Huh?! Huh!? Cos tehy r teh brokken!!

[/next argument]

Let's compare units on the market: The Xbox is setting at 21 million, and the PS2 is setting at over 85 million. If the defect count is 10%, wouldn't you think more defects would be spoted in the unit selling more than the unit not selling as many? Let us not go there.

Ah, I had read your post as saying "after PS3 launches you won't be able to find new units" versus "3 years after". That said, I think 3 years after you will still find PS2. In 2003, Sony sold over 3m PSone units. Nintendo didn't sell twice that in terms of GC IIRC.

no problems , missreads happen ,

as for sony i thought u meant they sold more than the gc to date .

Sony could have sold more than 3 m psones if they could get them on shelves . There are alot of people who bought launch systems with the drives not working properly anymore that have been coming in looking for the new ones
