Sony PS3 basic online service to surpass Xbox360 Silver

Because people aren't interested in playing online.

It's not about getting enough broadband infrastructure.

A lot of people have tried and they give it up.

I think most of those people aren't interested in playing with or against RANDOM players online. Me personally once my boys (aka friends) get broadband accounts I can't see why we wouldn't want to play against each other in Madden or play whatever game in co-op. Why wouldn't you?

Play online all the time.

Got cable modem service 8 years ago mainly to play online.

Just my assessment of gamers in general. I believe still, most of the biggest-selling games are singleplayer -- GTA, GT4, etc.

Madden has a big online following. But the thousands who play regularly online are dwarfed by the millions who don't.

that is all true

what is also true is.... things change. ;)

As far as I know Sony is not providing most of the "cool" Xbox Live Silver features like global friends lists and messaging - they are providing a network infrastructure mostly based on SOE tech and letting some middleware companies provide some fancy middleware which does Xbox-ish stuff. Not groundbreaking, more like catching up with Xbox v1. I'm sure we'll hear more about this by tomorrow anyway.

The one thing they can do which Xbox won't is connectivity with PSP, and of course Rev with DS. I'm sure the connectivity thing will be exploited by Japanese developers, but PSP games are having a hard time being profitable these days - most devs are waiting till the user base is 10 times bigger than it is now because the games are just too expensive to make to be worth it. DS on the other hand is closer to GBA budget and easier to make a profit off of.

GDC: Phil Harrison Post-Keynote Q&A
3/22/2006 12:18:38 PM

GameDaily Biz live coverage continues with several follow-up questions posed to SCE President Phil Harrison after Sony's GDC content.
...
Mr. Harrison then clarified something regarding the PlayStation Network, saying multiplayer play and features will be completely free. He didn't go into further details.
...

It's confirmed! Good news! Now it's well aware by all of us that there maybe some titles that may require a time fee. But besides that, most of them probably wont require nothing at all!
Not to mention the included standard HDD!

"Phil Harrison has confirmed that internet confirmations of PS3's HDD are unconfirmed, and confirmation of the unconfirmed remarks about PS3 coming with an HDD as standard remains unconfirmed. When asked if he could confirm PS3 would come with an HDD as standard, Phil would only confirm that games are to use an HDD, confirming Ken Kutaragi's comments on the matter, but not confirming it's presence as standard. We can confirm this report, which confirms that Phil Harrisons confirmation that confirmations were unconfirmed, confirms previous speculation on the matterm without actually confirming anything worth confirming."

Can you confirm a link to the confirmation? ;)
