Sony loses GTA exclusivity before next gen

Nobody thought it would sell well before the contract. Sony got lucky and probably didn't even have to pay that much for it.

I just find it strange that so many people here seem to think that all Sony has to do is try and they'll have GTA exclusivity sewn up. I see no reason to believe that.

Quite right.
Also we have no idea if by end of 2004 GTA remains a big seller as it is now.
Like MGS2 everyone wanted it on Xbox but when it was actually released on Xbox it didn't do as well as expected. Because splinter cell was a bigger thing on Xbox.

Who knows ...Oct 2004 is still a long way away

If I remember, the exclusivity contract was signed after game went uberhuge... which is why the PC GTA3 supports Xbox-like features like custom MP3 radio stations (in other words, it started off as an Xbox port).

Nor have they been the only ones after it, before the current contract...

The GTA series is 10X more sort after by console makers now then it was when Sony got it as an exclusive.

Eh? What makes custom radio stations a XBox like feature anymore then its a PC like feature??

The next one is due out in 2004. A month later, "Grand Theft Auto 3" and "Vice City" finish exclusive run on Sony's PlayStation 2 and will be available for Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube. "And they will sell, like, a jillion copies," Pachter said. "

Are people not reading whats written here?

In 2004 the next GTA comes out. A month later, GTA3 and GTA:VC loose exclusitivity. He didn't state anything about GTA4 or whatever comes next... He said GTA3/VC loose it...

Uhm, am I the only one who thinks this is the funniest thing I have ever read in my life???
newsflash, custom MP3's began on PC, Halflife allowed custom Mp3 soundtracks(as do all Halflife mods), is Halflife an Xbox port too?
GTA for PC was built for PC from the ground up, with a control
and camera scheme that wouldnt work out so well on any console.

the series began on PC, which is why Rockstar continues to show its
support to the PC community.

The GTA3 port for the PC was absolutely atrocious. Not in the actual gameplay area, but the bugginess and extremely poor performance. People actually went through the code and it was really sloppy. I know of at least one guy who was optimizing a couple of files for the gaming community since Rockstar was nowhere to be found with regards to a patch.

Actually we wont know for sure unless we know the exact contents of the contract or after Oct 2004

As according to Gamespot
Under terms of the agreement, Grand Theft Auto III and future installments in the series released before October 2004 will be released only on the Sony PlayStation 2 video game platform.

This doesn't say that these game will loose their exclusivity just that any new GTA game released after Oct 2004 is not covered by this deal.

my friend had a Radeon and a Duron 600, and ran it without any trouble..
the poor performance was at first blamed on the code, but oddly enough, new video card drivers are what wound up making it run smoothly.

Right, lets not revist the trails/motion blur issue on GTA3 PC.

I mention the MP3 radio station as, well, its become virtually a defacto standard for certain genres of Xbox games, FAR more so than on the PC where you just have Winamp running in the background heh [which virtually nullifies this 'feature' in games anyway imo].

Mention custom MP3 soundtracks to the average gamer, and I'd wager money that the majority would say "oo, Xbox!" rather than "oo, PC!".

Anyways, just speculation on my part. I expect Rockstar was developing an Xbox build in parallel to their PC one before signing the deal with Sony. It would seem that most developers keep PC builds around for debugging purposes and such, not exactly a huge leap to make it Xbox-able (especially with Renderware).

Imagine this:

Xbox2 in winter 2005, with Halo: Galaxy Battle Online Another and GTA: Online make-yeah-own Mafia, as exclusive launch games!

Just like casual gamers know Xbox as Playstation X, no harm knowing Xbox2 as Playstation X2! Games sell da consoles! Early birds + money hat$ might just catch the worms for MS this time round.

That is why, Sony must not overly delay PS3 launch imo.

So really the game just has to slip to nov of 04 and it can come out on all 3 systems .

Or they can release one version in Sept 04 keeping it exclusive to PS2 for few months
and release slightly modified version for XB/GC during christmas.

basing from a comment from someone affliated to Take2/3drealms, i'd say this is what going to happen

then again, he also says that DNF will absolutely rock (i really hope so though)
