Sony announcement/party 21st July Japan

I wonder what of PS3 will be shown. I very much doubt there will be playables there, but maybe new announcements and media. Perhaps more info on the technical details too?

Well, one thing:

If they pull it off right it could turn into another Sony coup over a similarly timed Microsoft conference. The analogue being Sony vs Microsoft at E3, and the present example being Sony 21st Playstation Meeting vs Microsoft July 25th XBox Summit.

They better have more than pre-rendered videos this time around. But knowing Sony...
Now if Sony only showed pre-rendered videos at E3, I'd say you were on to something...

Sony must be damn worried about that X360 summit on the 25'th. I wonder if they have insider knowledge of just what MS will be announcing/showing there?

It has to be something big for Sony to schedule something like this because before now MS was always dismissed as an afterthought in Japan.

This same meeting took place last year, it's not like this event was created specifically to counter MS.

Exactly, it's just the timing that could be considered Microsoft specific; and frankly I think it's a smart move.

It's Microsoft who SHOULD bring the most interest anyway since they probably have playable games to demonstrate. I'm sure Sony will not reveal many secrets like developer contracts/games/specs and so on. I do expect to see many revealings from microsoft.

So guys who do you think is going to have more pressure amongst them between these meetings?

A. Sony:

1. because they are the all-time consoles leaders.
2. MS couldn't sell even sell 2 million consoles in Japan.
3. The PS3 is made in Japan, thus we all now that the Japaneese have true loyalty to their country's products.

B. Microsoft:

1. Relatively speaking they are the new kids on the block.
2. They are picking up alot of Japaneese support that they didn't have last time.
3. They will have games that are closer to complete.

Off topic, but what date is Square Enix's show? Late July sometime, right?
July 30, I believe
30th is a Saturday, I think it's the 29th.

So, I don't think we should expect to see or hear much about the PS3. TGS is only 2 months away, and I'm pretty sure that Sony would want to save it's ammo for that event. Maybe we might get to see some new media for the announced games, maybe a new controller. ;)

Sony has the pressure on them, as they have the most to lose in this region. MS has nothing to lose and everythign to gain, so I can't see how the pressure would be on them.

I doubt we will see much PS3 stuff. I seem to remember just a few weeks ago about Sony "shutting up" about their next gen stuff until after the holidays. Remember, Sony has PS2 and PSP sales to keep in mind. Going tit-for-tat against MS only emphasizes the next gen debate.

Sony has stated, "The next gen starts when we say it begins". I can see them riding out the rest of the year for the most part and beginning the PS3 noise come early Spring.

What would Sony show for this event ?

I'm more conversative about the event. I think it's going to be based on existing or near shipping products just because it's not wise to keep promoting unavailable products like PS 3. People might think PS 2 is aging. Sony pushing PS 3 will just reinforce the perception. The event may also pre-empt MS's attempt to put down PS 2 during launch. So I speculate that the focus will probably be the Playstation family/brand. So let's see...

(A) Installed base and content maturity -- since XBox 360 would be unproven here from both developer and consumer perspective.

* PS 2 game sales highlights, awards. Restate PS 2 support from developers, exciting new games coming out. On the consumer front, possible bundling ? get people to spend more money on PS 2.

* PSP second wave of games (Talkman and more ?)

(B) "New" platform -- to dilute Xbox 360's newness

* (I wish !) One new PS 2 angle (Spin ! Spin ! Spin !). EyeToy 3 ? Another PSX ?

* New PSP services (borrowing from Korean's successful web browser + online tie-in)

(C) Sneek peak into the future -- to leapfrog MS's vision.

* Same thing as E3 (Large numbers, renders, ...). Many people didn't make it to E3 (I couldn't go last minute 8^( ). May be with user controllable tech-demos in E3 at best. I'd love to play with the ducks or fly-by the mountains just to get a piece of the future. No playable games.

EDIT: Grammar

@Acert: I don't know about that. Regardless of anythign else Sony has said, I would be shocked if TGS did not include at least a decent PS3 contingent.

@QRoach: I see where you're coming from, but it's not as if Microsoft does not have it's own pressures as well. They're doubling-down on the money they're comitting to breaking open the Japanese market to their console, and at the very least, failure on the order of last gen would probably mean their pull-out from that market.

Even if Microsoft the company does nto have reason to sweat, the individuals fearing for their jobs over at XBox Japan certainly have reason.

Well that isn't necessarily true -- that is one way of looking at it... a strange way. If Sony does nothing, chances are it will still be the most popular in Japan -- if microsoft does nothing it will still be the same as it was before. Sony could do nothing out of the ordinary (thus no pressure) while Microsoft does everything and Sony will still likely beat the pants off Xbox2 in Japan. Microsoft might have everything to gain and nothing to lose (in one sense), but it still has the most pressure by the sheer fact that it has to try very hard to break into the market -- Sony already controls the market for the most part, there isn't much pressure to do anything different than what it already does.
