so who is buying a xbox360 in 2 months?

I'll be waiting, for ps3 that is. Xbox360 looks nice in some areas but overall im more impressed and open to what sony will be doing this gen. Hopefully we can get a worldwide spring launch so i wont have to wait as long but I have my doubts that will happen.

Out of curiosity, precisely what do you think Sony will be doing this gen that MS will not?

Sony may also be releasing a 70" SXRD set but I haven't seen anything confirming that yet.
70" SXRD is the Qualia :p

That said, the 2 new SXRD sets coming out(50" and 60") don't accept 1080P via HDMI either -_-

Delivering upon the the games they have shown. (meaning im more impressed with the titles on the ps3 side than the ms side, thats what it really comes down to, what games do you want to play more)

It just really matters if the final games will be on par or better than what they have shown.

no, not likely. ps3 is a definite buy, and basically, if I have to have 2 system, I will have to wait and see if new mario is worth a buy

But considering that you haven't actually seen any PS3 games, how can you make that judgement?

If there were a half dozen or more playable PS3 games shown at TGS, and you made this comment after, I wouldn't question it at all. But about the closest thing you've seen to a playable PS3 game is a demo of a port of UT2007.

Nobody knows how close any of these systems will be able to deliver what has been shown so far. I will say this though. I would never blindly trust any corporate mouthpiece.

Leaning towards PS3 (one console guy) because:

1) More used to the DS layout with analog sticks on the bottom (shouldn't be that hard to adjust to the Xbox layout but it was)
2) More interested in PS3-exclusives than Xbox-exclusives (don't play FPS so that rules out Halo, GoW and PD0 to a certain extent).
3) Will likely get an SED or OLED in the next 5 years with 1080p I/O. Hopefully, there will be some PS3 game which output at 1080p.
4) Blu-Ray - has more momentum and will be a viable HD disc format even if HD-DVD takes off (which isn't likely).

If I buy an X360 this year, it would likely be an impulse buy, because Madden 360 offers radically different gameplay, not just prettier graphics and PS3 is further away (like Nov. rather than June). Pre-emptive price cut before PS3 even launches would also be enticing.

once again im talking about the titles. the ps3 has the exclusive titles id like to play more than the 360 exclusives. its like everyone waiting and wanting to play halo 3; same thing but for me its tekken or mgs4.

when i said this

im talking about the showings from all the conferences and what not. the titles just appeal to me more. many were cgi/rendered, yes, but from what we have been getting lately it looks like all those showings wont be too far off the mark.

the titles are a big factor. the features are also another factor that makes me want a ps3 over a 360.

Premium Pack here as well with

*One additional Wireless controller
*Rechargable battery pack and cord (for both controllers)
*Perfect Dark Zero
*Call of Duty 2 if available / or Quake 4 if COD2 isnt

As for buying a PS3 at launch, if its over $399 I will wait for the price drop and have to be content with my Xbox 360 and PC until then :/

I just wanted to confirm that in the Premium package they include a DvD controller but its a simple one different from the one you can buy as the add on correct?

I paid off my xbox360 a couple of days ago, because I'm just sick of all my friggin' xbox games. I'm sure there's good stuff out there that I don't have, but I'm ready for something new. There hasn't been much of anything cool for the last few months, and I've been getting way too much exercise. I'm sure it'll sting a little when Mgs4 comes out, but I look at it this way; by the time game devs really "get a handle on the multithread" stuff, PS3 will probably be cheap enough for me to buy one of those too.

Why?, I'm sure all the games are going to be in 720p. You'l be better off, buying 720p display for now, as they are quite cheap, and use it for few years and then upgrade to 1080p.
I'm going to buy X360 close to launch, I'm not sure though am I going to import it or not.

Well i'm not only buying an HDTV just for consoles you know, in fact i'd imagine most of my HDTV time will be spent with HDDVD/BlueRay which apparently have native resolutions of 1080i/p.
Unless my financial situation changes dramatically, i don't imagine shelling out a lot of money for all new HDTVs ever 2 years or so. My HDTV will have to last me A LONG time.
Dunno, i don't see why spend lots of money on a 720p set when next-gen-DVDs will be best seen at a resolution with 1920 horizontal pixels instead of 1280. It's a big diference to me, whether it's 1080i or p.

Could I suggest that instead of locking yourself into 720p or 1080i, instead get the best HDTV set for the money. Go look at some sets (preferrably in natural lighting, mess with the color, etc), find a half dozen you like in your price range and then go read some reviews--a couple for each set. Setup the pros and cons, and the bang for buck and then go back and view the sets again.

My reasoning is that depending on the technology you may notice different things (e.g. that an interlaced image annoys you). And seeing in person is important. But don't trust your own eyes in a show room... so definately read up on the sets.

Most people have a hard time telling the difference between the two. Most sets have decent scaler units and both offer not only better resolution but also widescreen--not to mention superior inputs.

My personal preferance is a progressive scan image. It appears more "sharp" to me and flickers less.

1080p is the sweet spot, but even that has not officially adpoted 60fps yet (at least the last time I checked).

Anyhow, be careful. Not all HDTVs display what you would think. e.g. a recent thread discussed someones 1080i set and it said it displayed like 90% of the verticle pixels (540 * 90% = ~480). So you had there basically a standard TV interlaced!

So just find something that looks great *to your eye* and be happy with it :D

Personally... I would say wait for 1080p HDMI sets to drop in price and use your PC monitor for a year ;)

The problem with me is that even 1080i will need a set capable of 1920 horizontal lines. All HDTV released here are 720p/1080i but not true 1080i because these sets only have 1280 horizontal lines. That's a big difference, much bigger than the 720p/1080i difference in vertical resolution.
So in the end, i might just wait for the 1080p ones.

Then what you "must" do is buy some small monitor or something to get the best out of next gen!. This is nitpicking and I know that you know your stuff, but there are 1080 horizontal lines in 1080p and i, and that is the vertical resolution, now on each of those lines there are 1920 pixels.

we should create a "help london-boy buy his 1080P big ass flathdtvomg screen" fund

paypal , money transfer, cash accepted.

off course, nothing comes for free, you will be asked some favours in return...

I guess the big push for HDTV in Europe will come just before WC.

By then 1080p sets will not necessarily be plentiful nor cheap. Nor devoid of compromises like 1080p inputs.

They will probably broadcast in 720p or 1080i so any 1080p screen would have to upconvert.

Of course, you hope by this time a year from now, the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players will be out and some titles and players will actually be outputting 1080p.

WC will be broadcasted in 720p at least in Germany (though on a PayPerView channel). On all other channels just a plain 16:9

Hmm, you wonder if there will be broadcasts here. Euro 2004 was only on Direct TV and it wasn't cheap, like a $200 or so for all the matches and they were NOT in HDTV.

However, InHD did broadcast them in HDTV days after the matches.

For WC2002, ESPN did broadcast them on their various affiliates live and even some weekend matches on ABC. Only problem is, they have a limited number of HDTV trucks so unless they can get the same feed used by Euro. broadcasters, they may not be in HDTV for the US.

If the HDTV makers are smart, they will sponsor the costs of getting the HDTV feeds over here. Even in a country indifferent to soccer, the WC should generate some hype.
