'SirEric' interview (ATI) @ DH

Has it been confirmed before that the 9500 chips were rejected 9700 cores? I recall some controversy regarding that matter.

Yes (in fact that responce came from Eric). R300 had redundancy built in.

Edit:
I mean, it's been very clear that they were R300 cores, but maybe not whether they were mutilated on purpose or not.
Guess as with every other product based on a partially defunct die, depending on supply (read: problems at manufacturing) and demand, you might be forced to use fully functional dies to fullfill the orders.

Given the success rate for 9500 -> 9700 conversions, I'd say ATi / TSMC either had better yields or more orders for the vanilla 9500 than expected, probably a bit of both.

As for the picture, it was somewhat shocking. I never thought about how the sir looked like (what's next, OpenGl guy
OpenGLGuy makes up for in hair anything that sireric lacks.

Not that I should throw stones, I fear that my slowly-growing bald patch is not just from the thumb... no comments Andy.

If they were mutilated on purpose then they obviously did a bad job on the ones people can softmod back into fully working r300 chips again. :)

Also considering the wide variety of errors on the ones that don't mod succesfully then it would suggest they were all random genuine manufacturing errors.

Sorry everyone, but the "cutest" B3d'er is Tagrineth......

And, even at 52, I've got "most" of my hair.......

I actually have no idea what Dave and Marco (my B3D colleagues, that is) look like.

Spot me

You're under the table inbetween that poor girl's legs? Edit - no, you're off looking for a proper pint glass! What's with the girly tumblers?

There was a "post a picture of yourself" thread a while ago. Pretty interesting stuff. I always pictured sireric dressed in chainmail, carrying a lance and a big shield bearing the ATi logo.

The interview is a great read - nice to here from somebody on the hardware side for a change. :)

MuFu.

Thats not one of your better pictures... then again

all I remember is both are rather, er, plump (ok, plump is too strong a word) with one able to pass off as Santa (with dark brown beard, of course) and the other with a pate similar to Eric's.

  Don't make me post that crooked smile of yours ;)

Funnily enough, so did I.

Oh well, another dream shattered....

tagrineth is the cutest b3der?

thats pretty much like saying "tagrineth is the only female b3der" :)

anyway

1. so who is dave-b on that photo ??? the truth must out ;)

2. interesting the r300 has built in redundancy , do they mean an r300 could be a 9700 or 9500 ? or do they mean that there are 'extra bits' which come on stream if there are minor fab failings ? ? kinda like the 'clive sinclair' idea of about 5 yrs ago

Actually, the 9700 & 9800 cores are both similar (some changes and new process), which is why I "lumped them together", but they are different silicon. Both of them have built-in a design which allows for full functionality with only 1/2 the die working. A few months ago, when I checked, not a single 9500 had been shipped that had used a 9700 level die. That's the main reason that availability on it is much lower than demand.
