Silent Hill3 OMG!

My reflections(have played 3hours) this far.
The gfx is OUTSTANDING, never seen anyting like this.
First the shadows are superb, they move over the backgrounds and really interacts with every object on screen.
I haven´t sucked in the story so much compared with SH2 simply because i have "harder" too indentify myself with Heather than James.

Hey, it´s great to have some impressions. One question, does the game really look as good as in the screenshots? Or has some aspect of them were..ahem...bumped?

Yes, the game does look like the screenshots, if you turn the noise filter off.
Obviously the screenshots are a little bit more 'clean' and higher image quality, but the models and textures are definitely the same in the game as in screenshots. And especially the facial animation is the best I have seen in any game.

I know with the sh2 and others the mouth sync was great with the original language they were built for but in english they tend to look a little funny, ie mouth moving while they aren't talking anymore and vice versa. Is this still going on or have they found a way of getting rid of this kinda like hl2 has said to be? Just curious.

In SH3 the lip-sync is very good. I don't know if they make a Japanese version with Japanese lip-sync, but this time the english is synced perfectly.

The control system is the same as in SH2, you can choose between Resident Evil type '3D' control, or Devil may Cry type '2D' control (I prefer the 2D). There are no added moves or anything such. I'd like to see a MGS2 type control in next SH, it would be cool to be able to peek around the corners and shoot in fp.

Some of the screens had noise mode enabled ;) It looks better and moodier with noise, IMO especially now that they've improved it in SH3.

Yes, I always play the SH game first time with the noise on, it gives that cinematic moody atmosphere.

I'm not sure about the 'Sharp' and 'Soft' options though.
When the game puts on that noise (it is not on all the time, even if you enble it in the options.
For example it is off in 'normal' mall sections, but on in 'hellish' mall), and if you turn on 'Sharp' the noise is more emphasized (more like SH2). But when there is no noise, the 'Sharp' option makes little difference (in my eyes). It seems to affect mostly the textures, making them a little sharper, but does not add edge aliasing noticeably. It seems to function a little like the sharpness control in most tv sets.

I have the noisefilter on, looks better imo.
The cutscenes are amazing but i dont think they "stand" out of the game as the gfx in-game look equal amazing.
I still don´t get how they are getting the shadows and lightning look soo god. I even think it looks a great deal better then ReRemake on GC.
I got real scared tonight playing and it´s getting light now so i wait until the night before i get started again.

rabidrabbit, soft/sharp option is essentialy a flicker fixer. With 'sharp', filter is disabled so you get some visible interlace flicker (especially on higher quality TVs), but the image looks a bit sharper. I like it as it is on default ('soft', 'noise on')

Got my copy today and I must say I am impressed, a lot! :D
Visuals are absolutely great. And the sound is also top-notch, especially if you have surround. About 2 hours into it and I'm totally hooked.
Won't play more until tomorrow though... very scary :)

I'm so jealous...anyone know when it's coming to the states?

5th of August...
Hehehe, finally us europeans got a
Big one first :D

But you'll probably get the soundtrack included, which we didn't

Yes it´s good we finally get something first, hehe..
I´m really suprised that the shadows interact with everything as i first thought that it was only the characters.
I think that SH2 still had a more compelling storyline and felt more genuine but i guess it´s natural that they made the game "more" easy to understand and not soo deep so it would appeal to a wider audience.

the-magicbox is reporting this....

"Konami mentioned that Silent Hill 4 is currently under development, the game will use a completely new game engine to further enhance the graphic qualities."

I hope they hold off until PS3 for SH4..

A remake of SH1 would be cool though.

Wtf would be the point making an entirely new graphics engine for SH4 on ps2? That would take alot of time, and it's not needed, they could use a modified SH3 engine for PS2.

This pretty much says to me that the game will not be on PS2, but something further like PS3.

I really can´t think of anything that could be made better graphicswise, perhaps the flickering but it don´t stand out so much when you play with soft and noise filter.
Regarding the gameplay, it took me 10hours to finish the game, SH2 took me maybe double the time.
My final impression of the game is that it is not as good as SH2 because the story is more confusing and at the same time not as deep.

Well, 'soft' option IS flicker fixer, so they actually already did what they could to reduce flickering. I don't think there's a way to get 'sharp' and non-flickered picture on interlaced TVs.

Does it feature its trademark FOG?? Does it have UFO ending....which is pretty much been a part of SH series!!! :D
