Something that has gameplay? :p

or rather, something that has gameplay that I want? ;)

Are you saying SOTC will have no gameplay? Or that the gameplay sucks?!?!? If the gameplay is half as beautiful as ICO I'll be more than happy.
Actually I think the first next gen games will be the ones lacking in gampplay department, concentrating moer on flashy grphix ;)

Hehe, Ico didn't field render in the classical sense. It didn't run at 60hz alternating the scanlines - it run at 30, updating only one set of lines. Good to hear about prog scan as this means better image quality (the E3 video setup was atrociously bad for this game, though - prog scan was not enabled for sure, and it was probably connected to LCD TVs using S-video) but I'd rather they go with Ico way of rendering and keep the framerate at steady 30FPS (the E3 demo of SotC had unstable framerate). I doubt Sony would allow that video mode anymore though.

As for gameplay, atmosphere and freshness of the experience, SotC felt a whole lot more "next gen" than any actual next gen game on the show floor. The game certainly wow-ed players and on-lookers a whole lot more than new NFS:MW, Condemned, Top Spin 2, or random WW2 shooter #45432...

Same goes for Okami. Remember that scene from PS3 unveiling where they had dead landscape transforming into life? Well, Okami has it's own rendition of such scene, and I kid you not, it looked more beautiful and appealing despite being obviously nowhere near on the pure technical level to the tech demo scene.

Almost mkaes me want these two games are pushed to PS3 with no graphics updates whatsoever, just made to run at 1080p with perfect framerate (framerate is not problem in Okami but it is occasionaly in SotC) Here's hoping PS2 emulation on PS3 will allow such resolution enhancements.

Even with all of the console blare from the conference - Okami and SotC still shine through brightly. They are, IMO, the pinnacle of game development and the best of what's to come (so far) when you consider the convergence of technology and art.

It's funny - when people talk about technological advances in living/breathing worlds it's often in reference to a higher number of roving NPCs (or in the case of Molyneux - the grass growing ;)). The aformentioned games go a step beyond this and seem to virtually breathe themselves - much like Ico.

When people were wondering about what we meant with "fake HDR" on PS2... (NOT bloom)

There is a scene on one of those videos that shows just that.

It's fake, but it looks like an HDR effect. The camera is pointing outside to a very bright outdoor and the charachter comes into view and you can basically only see his shape (it looks black), same for the walls around him, much like HDR.

GT3 had that too. You'd drive round a corner and be heading into the sun, and the scenery darkened to simulate the contrast between a brighter sky.

Yes these games are so beautiful. Honestly just watching both of those game video makes me want to cry. You know guys there are some games that you can just watch someone else play just to watch the beauty. Okami and SOTC are great examples. Art direction devs, its all in the art.

Couldn't agree more.

It can't be stressed enough how much more creative, unique and fun these two games were compared to, in my opinion, misguided and failed attempts to next gen games on the show floor. If they don't want to be creative and artistic like these two, next gen games really need to look and feel like that Motor Storm trailer, or Killzone trailer or Heavenly Sword trailer, or otherwise there's just no point, IMO.

I had a small crowd of people behind me cheering for me when I was fighting that monster in SotC. Just looking at that fight was certainly something.

I agree - the idea of next generation for me has always been immersion and these games seem to apply that to the reviously defined genres (where Okami, SotC and Ico really fuse a genre of their own although they might just be a reinvention of the adventure genre but I digress...).

The previous generations have gone (IMO) something like this:

PS1/N64 - 3D revoultion
PS2/XBox/GCN - Geometry and Media convergence
Next Gen - 3D and Media realization

lol, Counterstrike Xbox does the same when you go outside. The screen dims somewhat as though your own eyes are adjusting.
