SCEI CTO Masa Chatani talks about Cell

credit and thanks to Nirey on PS3insider.com PS3 board for this:

http://www.playstation3insider.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2561

if someone can transalate this word for word from japanese to English it would be of great benefit because here he talks about "Cell" and i tried transalating through babel fish but it's not very good because it makes it look and sound like that "Cell" isn't that all powerfull. He also talks about the psp too.

orginal japanese verision:

of particular note this:

CELL based system development circumstance

- In the concert in E3 2004 Chadani CTO, did announcement concerning the CEll based work station. For the CEll based image chestnut thornback tar which IBM and SCEI develop jointly IBM offers the work station, tries to be able to do image chestnut thornback Shaun of the movie and the game with the identical platform. SCEI offers the development work station of the Cell based next generation game machine and the next generation game contents in addition to this.

"What you can speak at present time is just contents in the concert, but we assume that already it adds a little, if is, as for the focus in the CELL based product there is a very powerful floating point arithmetic efficiency. The fact that, the CELL based next generation machine which becomes the contents player becomes very powerful, means that also from the production person needs the powerful work station above. Further in the future, being the case that it reaches the point where image of high quality is required, it is the case that the enormous operational ability to be able to correspond to the environment such as that becomes necessary ",

- The high network permeability where in a manner of speaking even the multiple core processor which is tied with network you can say CELL has become one of feature. OS because distributed processing is actualized probably is some kind of development circumstance. In addition, as for that being existing distributed OS as the base something which such as Mach designates?

"The distributed processing part considerably has been completed, but publication is not possible yet. Simply, opening it is something which is sent with a some distributed processing technology as a foundation ",

- As for the CELL work station, tying the plural CELL work stations, becoming something which has software below it can do distributed processing programming?

"You cannot call with present time at all, but we would like to offer the environment such as that to the developer with you think",

- For the CELL based next generation machine as for the software development framework, in the developer being the stage which has already been explained?

Explanation of the framework has not done "vis-a-vis still the developer. But, inside the company basic policy and the essence have been decided. In addition with the vendor of part, it is in the form of exchange of opinions concerning the directivity of the development framework discussing. A more careful support where there is also the reflection with PS2 basically, is by the library, is done. This PSP is the same ",

- The next generation PS with single processor, during confrontation thinks that the game just title which designates single processor as the target. If development is done for the next generation machine making use of the software development framework, future with mounting the library side transparently in distributed processing becoming correspondence possible?

"You must become so, probably will be. Because with OS and library side, management is done in regard to distributed processing, following to the framework, if it is the software which was constructed, it reaches the point where it can receive the benefit of distributed processing to transparent ",

- CELL as for the concept that, it is connected via network thinking that when around "real" it becomes the thing?

For example "as for the first generation PS, already 1 hundred million units have spread in the world. The next generation machine 1 hundred million units, thinks the time where it spreads that the environment where CELL is connected via Internet has been prepared. In addition, also the digital home appliance and the like which uses CELL exists probably will be in home. If the product of CELL loading increases, it becomes easy to make also the software which utilizes the feature of CELL ",

Please discuss and help me because i think the transalation is wrong or the interviewer miswrote what he heard.

PS3 doesn't have the broadband engine as the original patent suggested, it has a single Cell that is 1 PU + 8 APU as its CPU.

This is not what the Rambus, Toshiba, SCE contract states...

Where does that quote come from?

BTW, you can read the quote as saying that the broadband engine wont be the one suggested in the patent ... which doesnt contradict anything.

I second Mfa's question.
And moreover I fail to see how would a different number of PEs preclude the CPU from being called BroadbandEngine. :p

Contract between Toshiba, Rambus and SCE, to impliment Rambus XDR memory and Redwood interface with the Broadband Engine, to be used in the Sony Playstation 3.

There is a new version of this contract now!

Look at all the juicy new stuff we could be reading about that's not in the first version.

Sorry Paul I deleted my post, for other reasons (not to make you look stupid).

I like section 2.11 in that contract... Guess you need such a thing when making deals with teh devi^h^h^h^h rambus.

The interesting points -

- Re-emphasizes that creators require workstations with high-performance as well. Had a lot of discussion on this board about this. Will see how this turns out.

- Not giving details about the software dev framework yet, but says that they are creating the framework by discussions with vendors(tools/middleware vendors?) to exchange ideas/opinions. Reiterates that they have learnt from the mistakes of the PS2 and will provide library support at least as comprehensive as that for the PSP. (OT: No PSP dev on these boards?)

- This part is a bit muddled. After re-reading it a couple a times I think that there is a printing error. It says "next-gen PS is single processor", then later part of the sentence suggests it is not :?: Here is how I think it should read - development may feell like it is for a single processor system. The OS and library will take care of work distribution and the like - making it transparent to the dev. Note that the article is vague here - it may be just be referring to when work is shared out among multiple CELL-based systems, not when dividing work among PEs/APUs and the like.

This was posted already, right after E3.

Anyway, I always wanted to ask this, since sometimes ago, keep forgetting about it.

1.21 Rambus Multichip Module............................................7

What's that ? Is that Rambus MCM for the memory of some sort ?
