There is an advantage: Higher triangle throughput. The PSone does not support triangle strips, so if you use triangles you'll need 3 vertices per triangle, while if you use quads you'll need 2 vertices per triangle.

Actually it's more like 4 vertices per 2 triangles. But that's kinda nitpicking. ;)
