GameCube joins XBox as a no-longer produced console.

Nintendo stops Cube production

There's no more hardware or first-party games being produced.

Out of curiousity, how do the lifespans of these consoles compare with other generations. GB was the longest running. PS1 did very well. What about the NES and SNES eras? How long did they stay around?

Well I don't know about SNES or NES, but certainly the Megadrive was still on sale in the UK at Argos into about 1997/1998. I remember looking at the PS1 and Saturn at around that sort of time and noting that the Megadrive was still in there.

Official Production Dates

NES: 1985-1995
SNES: 1991-2003
Genesis/Mega Drive: 1990-1996
Master System: 1985-1996

The GC was still being produced long after Xbox was discontinued because GC made a profit on hardware while Xbox lost money on hardware.

Honestly I'm surprised they're stopping GC production this early. But one thing people really need to consider when wondering why GC lasted so much longer than XBox... is really what I feel is something obvious: Wii is their successor console, and it just launched - we're talking about a three month crossover period here, which is extremely short. How can people phrase the question in terms of "how did it last this long?"

GC had no future from like two years ago. I remember looking at an EB games list for GC like one or two years ago and there were like 12 games left scheduled to come out, versus like 60 for Xbox. I mean two years ago, if not three, the GC was dead, really.

Xbox was different, it was a money losing pit of hardware built on a bad hardware financial model, so ms never wanted to support it a second longer than they had too. They were losing significant dollars on Xbox hardware right to the end when it was $149 (and they couldn't reduce it further without losing even more). GC and PS2 didn't have that particular problem, so Nintendo let the GC hardware live on a bit longer, even if it was dead for all intents and purposes.

lastest NPD figures
GameCube 33,806
Xbox 833

no doubt due to zelda
(+ before someone adds the higher figure is solely due to the xbox not being in production, the answer is no )

Xbox hasn't been in production for ages, and in fact someone stated no retailers even carry it anymore, so the answer is yes.

Why was the Gamecube discontinued long after the Xbox?

$

The Xbox was still costing MS money and with their new platform and some BC ability they decided to drop it. Nintendo wasn't in the same situation with the GCN, but as Carl noted followed the same path.

I haven't seen an Xbox in a store in a looong time. There were none available this holiday period where I live in the stores I visit.
