RIAA Wants Background Checks on CD-RW Buyers

"A CD-RW can be a dangerous weapon when it falls into the wrong hands," said RIAA President Hilary Rosen, "You wouldn't sell a gun to a convicted felon and you shouldn't sell a CD-RW drive to a Gnutella user. The 3 day waiting period gives us time to verify that no copyrighted material is on the purchasers hard drive and to make sure they have a membership in the Columbia House CD club."

Let's put background checks on knifes too(You can kill someone), or how about gasoline(Big explosions anyone?), or how about pnemonia and bleach(combine both and you make a deadly gas).

Not only do I know these people are now stupid; I now know that this is a classic case in where democracy fails. Where one corporation has so much influence over congress that they can basically do whatever the fuck they want, or propose it.

Sad sad.

Maybe the RIAA will learn that the best way to make money is to build a business that consumers want.

Actually, that's not the best way to make money.

The best way to make money is to build a business that sells a product that consumers are willing to pay for. There's a difference.

If it had been the MPAA I might have believed it.

The RIAA has a big bark, but ultimately they go for flashy but futile measures. It is the MPAA who go for the government mandated limitations on freedom to protect themselves. It is the MPAA who wants to put black box DRM in every digital device capable of playing media ... and put watermark detection in every A/D converter.

Basically digital fascism as described in in Stallman's "Right to read" is the only way to put a stop to widespread copyright infringement, and MPAA has made it crystal clear that they are lobbying to force governments to head that way (Im convinced that once the likes of Aschcroft really think about what it would mean to have such a black box in every computer they will start backing them).

The MPAA is evil, the RIAA is mostly harmless.

Russ, putting watermark detection in every A/D converter might sound like satire ... but the MPAA has quite seriously proposed it :)

Considering the majority of people are going to be against it I can see a politician will see an opportunity to get more votes. ;)

What politicians see is who signed that campaign contribution cheque with all the zero's.
