Revolution to feature stereoscopic 3D?

Just speculation but with some very interesting info in there as well, if true:

- The IGN boys posted this regarding a patent for Nintendo’s upcoming display technology, which I linked to a few days ago. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to glean that this conceptually portrays a form of 3D image projection.

- At a major film conference called ShoWest just last month, a panel featuring George Lucus, Robert Zemekis, James Cameron, Robert Rodriguez, and a satellite feed from Peter Jackson has studio reps, journalists, and theatre owners seriously jazzed about their plans to integrate cheap digital stereoscopic 3D (like recent IMAX features) into ALL major chains by 2007. Lucas even showed several minutes of the original STAR WARS with remapped visuals that popped off the screen and hovered in front of audience members. When an agent friend of mine was chatting with Rodriguez, he mentioned how they were aware of a game machine beating them to the mainstream 3D market.

- the next day, I contacted another strangely influential industry pal/pundit and shared my thesis purely for fun’s sake (and perhaps some extremely lame bragging rights). The final shiny block of tetrisy knowledge slid into place when he excitedly shared the following - that the Big N had shown a real-time 3D add-on for Gamecube behind closed doors (think he means stereoscopic addon)…AT LAST YEAR’S E3. It has since gone MIA. This is the sound of four rows dropping."

They also say it will have Gyroscopic wireless controllers and some other stuff but I'm not going to list everything.

BTW let me be the first to say:

Haha its teh virual boy.. its teh lame, it suxors... Well that's that out of the way so no one else need bother ;)

If they can do this in an affordable way and include HD movie playback, then it would be pretty awesome. Even as an optional addon, it would be awesome. :devilish:

Also everyone knows that VB was a great concept that was plagued by poor execution.

As the inventor of the Game & Watch, Game Boy, Virtual Boy, ROB, SNES and original + pad, Gunpei Yokoi is probably smiling in heaven right now. :)

Sounds cool. I'd want Rainbow 6 with a specially made controller modeled after a HK MP-5 to blast tango's in stereoscopic 3d.

With gyroscopic wireless controller and 3d stereoscopic display , we are getting closer to star trek's holo suite ;). But if N's Revolution did have these feature it will surely enhance gameplay.

nice. I remember getting flamed up and down for suggesting rev maybe a VR type unit. mhuhahaha Also suggested there gfx display patents last year were meant to reduce eye strain. This sounds awsome. I would buy one in a heartbeat.

I want my cookie

Still no cookie for you, man. Sorry.

From the blog of this "insider":
NOTE***: The following post is SPECULATION and EXTRAPOLATION based upon available information and industry connections. Please do not take what’s written below as FACT or GOSPEL…otherwise, you do so at your own reputational risk

You'll have to wait for E3, to know if you deserve that cookie or not. :p

By the way, I still don't buy the "Revolution Nintendo will have holograms/VR headset" hype.
I, also, must stress that this kind of expectations could (sadly, will) lead to a lot of, unfair, disappointment after E3.

How do you know Nintendo will release this info at E3?
Yeah, I heard, from Nintendo PR peeps, the: "They might not show the "revolutionary' part of the hardware at E3".
Even the, now infamous, word Spaceworld was cited as a possible event for this year.

But if they really do play, at this year's E3, the "We don't want our competitor to steal our ideas" card once again, while thoses same competitors have tons of stuff to show and steal the show.
Then that will confirm that Nintendo really loves to play a dangerous game when it comes to public relation and marketing.

Well it's been already said many times that E3 is a tradeshow for industry peeps. It's not like Nintendo won't have ANY info about Revolution at E3. E3 will mainly be about Zelda, DS, and free online wireless gaming service with some info about Revolution.

if ms has playable systems and game title releases out that is great for them they are launching in 4 months

If sony has the specs and some tape playing of what games will look like and some announced tittles that si great they are launching in a little less than a year

if nintendo has specs and mabye some tape playing of what games look like and announced titles then they are close to the other two companys

Why show something important to them that they think sony might steal

Any console maker could start selling those LCD-switcher googles and integrate this technology into their games. It's pretty trivial, I've used those things on a PC, and many DirectX demos worked fine with them even though they were not made with them in mind. I't a very neat thing.

Nintendo's implementation will probably be different though with maybe some interactivity thrown in. I mean why would they need to patent it if it's just 3D glasses that works on any game?

Now, I hear that those old movies made 3d, use a technique that analyzes parallax scrolling in the backgrounds to create the illusion of depth. Well, what if revolution could do that to any movie, say even on the DVD format, in real-time...far fetched I know, but that along with stereoscopic 3d goggles would make me cream my pants.

but LCD shutter goggles should be horrible on a standard TV (50/60Hz interlaced, each eye gets half the refresh rate, expect HEAVY flickering), would be problematic on 100/120Hz TVs (which do internal conversion from 50/60Hz), and would be incompatible with LCD TVs (as on LCD PC screens)

looks like it was still done anyway on the famicom

there are the famous 3D goggles for Sega Master System but I don't know how they work (thought I was by polarization but I wonder if it's LCD shutter?)

I had those goggles! Yes, it was alternating LCD shutters and the screen flickered like billyo until you got used to it. There was a degree of shimmer but it was playable. I doubt this could go mainstream though as 1) Most people would hate the shimmer and 2) Anyone without goggles sees an epileptic-fit inducing shaking display. No fun at all for party/social gaimng. The depth from the system was excellent though.

Alternatively, maybe Nintendo are going for a 3D random-dot stereogram effect like the original PC version of Magic Carpet?! :p

Cause if Sony/MS get the word, they might copy it anyway, so Nint might as well show their idea first and take credit for it?

A big YAY if true! :p

Switching gears: So if Nintendo goes in this 3D direction, what will that mean for third-party support and multiplatform games?

Will this solidify Nintendo's "go-it-alone" strategy and mean Revolution will play home to the company's first-party games, but little else?
