Redfall [XBSX|S, XGP, PC]

I tried it over xcloud and to my surprise i like it more than i thought i would. I like it more than Deathloop which i abandoned after 1 hour or so. Unfortunately i dont have any friends on my xbox account i can play with so no idea how it is in coop.
keep it going then.

I mean, I loved Ryse Son of Rome, and it had terrible metacritic scores. I also enjoyed a lot of earlier XBO titles that scored piss poorly.
So more power to that if you like it, just go for it.

I've not really got on with any of Arkane's games. Perversely, I'm quite looking forward to giving Redfall a go. I'm sort of excited by the AI complaints. If it's terrible I might have a chance of enjoying the game. I'm rubbish at FPS gameplay these days.

I really do feel bad for Arkane. Back in 2002, some local games magazine had its readers vote the best games of the year from various genres and Arx Fatalis was voted the year's biggest surprise game. Dark Messiah remains to this day one of my favourite games. Some of the best and chunky melee system, focus on HL2 style physics and that sweet Source engine feel and look. Dishonored back then with its trailers, unique world and mood got me into such a huge hype, i was counting the seconds until it came out. And in order to stretch the game as long as possible, i imposed to myself that i have to clear every enemy from every level without being seen. Got around 20 hours playing like that.

I hope they get the support they need from microfost and they bounce back in force from this

I think the game sounds interesting but the chances of me spending $70 are uh rather slim. I think the last time I was suckered into that it was Oblivion Collector's Edition and at least it had a metal coin, poster, behind the scenes DVD and a dumb little book about the history of Tamriel.

How did you beat Dishonored in only 20 hours? You have more to do there I think! Hell it has at least 2 endings and every mission has multiple approaches. Ghosting is a fun challenge.

There were plans to make Arx Fatalis 2 but they had problems finding publishers and ended up with Ubisoft and turning it into Dark Messiah and using Might & Magic branding. It was still an awesome game. Buggy as hell at launch. And by the way the Xbox 360 version is quite different, sort of an expanded version of the game.

And the Xbox version of Arx Fatalis has some additions too. Some more bump mapping, a second spell casting system and full Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound with environmental audio. Making the most of that nForce audio processor.

Remember this is not the same studio. Dishonored and all those other games was made by the original Arkane team (now Arkane Lyon).

Redfall is made by a newer development studio (Arkane Austin) whose first and only prior game was 2017's Prey. Arkane Austin was established in 2006, but mostly did work for hire until they took over the troubled development of 2017's Prey.

So, just the 2nd title that the team has released.

Played for an hour or so on the Series X. I think the game itself will be fun enough although the things you hear about the AI are a bit concerning.

But man, some of the graphics are rough. There are textures that are so low-res that I foresee a bunch of memes on the horizon. I know it's their first foray into a more open world experience, but it's genuinely mind boggling how bad some of it can look. DF will have a field day.

I've had a go on the fireman's pole.

I'm sure they don't exist in a bubble. People move around. The project leads Harvey Smith and Ricardo Bare are not exactly green and worked on Dishonored.

Arkane's games have never been particularly state of the art. Dishonored rightfully had endless whining about low resolution textures. Dishonored 2 was pretty amazing at the time, but Prey again was less impressive and seemed lower budget overall. Redfall might be an overpriced lower budget effort.

I guess I couldn't care less though. If it sounds fun and interesting I'll play anything even if it has PS1 retro style visuals. And isn't $70. :D

Dishonored was fun and the art style and level design were great. But from a technical perspective it certainly wasn’t a stunner. I also never got the whole “immersive sim” label. It played like a standard first person stealth game with a unique twist.

Maybe they should have stuck with Cryengine.
They already had experience with it, and it can be used for larger city-based fps games with mechanics and gameplay concepts that are somewhat similar to Redfall (Homefront: The Revolution).

I've read around that they released a 0 day patch that solves a lot of problems and improves performances and cpu utilization.
I don't understand why they didn't wait a week if they knew that it was so bad and that they had some mitigations almost ready.

So yea this isn't that great.

If you are on gamepass then go ahead and play it as it is fun. maybe wait for a few patches. My friends and I played last night and had a great time but playing it on my own was a bit of a slog. I think there was something fundamentally wrong some where in the design of the game. MS had already delayed the game and it is still in this rough of a shape. I've said it before that if they kept delaying eventually the game would be okay but I think they should have just scrapped it and moved on. Sometimes design choices on a game are unfixable and when this game was originally targeting the xbox one , ps4 choices were made that ended up not really working on the new consoles. I don't think they should close arkane but perhaps have them start on a new project targeting the next gen console and give them the 4 years or so and have it be a launch title for that

Fired it up on the Series X as it hasn't got much use lately. Going back to 30fps is jarring but it is kinda fun to play. Very unpolished though and the animations in particular can be shockingly bad. Worth the download if you get it free through Game Pass.
