Impressive, most impressive.

All their revitalising of the series better not amount to some nice new textures and a bunch of polygon detail I never see.

I loved the first game, and the second one was a real improvement - but since then there's just be no serious attempt to develop the gameplay. They had atmosphere, and visuals, but really the gameplay wasn't that hot.

If I spend half the game limping around looking for herbs and "driving" my supposedly fit soldier-type character like a shopping trolly, it's going in the bin. I don't want to try and juggle my inventory around, never quite sure why I only carry six objects regardless of whether they're tiny keys or oil-barrels. I'm also sick of watching animations of doors opening or my character plodding up stairs. Ok, you're loading some more data - I GET IT.

A little bit more logic in the puzzles and story wouldn't go amiss either - I mean, how many mega-corporations build all their secret complexes to look like stately mansions and make getting through doorways a long process of gathering strangely shaped keys via flower-arranging? Is this how Japanese people think us westerners actually conduct our daily business? Do they have no script-writers or designers with enough imagination to make up an interesting story with a relevant context?

Why is it I find it so hard to credit Capcom with any chance of fixing this?

Well, here you have some information about the game. It seems it will be different this time:

1. RE4 takes place in 2004, 6 years after RE2.
2. Umbrella is gone and with them,...the zombies.
3. Leon is hired by the president to guard his daughter. Before he can take the job, she is kidnapped and taken to a village in south america where all the villagers hunt him down in an eerie trance.
4. The worlds are completely wide open.
5. No more door animations or pre-rendered cutscenes. Everything is done in-engine.
6. Areas feature a few very brief loadtimes.
7. Enemies will react to damage done to them in places. Shooting an enemie in the foot will make them hobble.
8. Villagers are armed with sickles, axes, pitchforks, and many more sharp objects.Which they can throw at you. These are not mindless zombies.
9. You can shoot the thrown objects out of the air. If you time it right.
10. There is an action button. For instance, you can shoot an enemie and then quickly close the gap and kick them in the chest. Also to move objects in front of doors to keep villagers from you. Also to puch a ladder full of enemies off from you and more.
11. In a later level, you are in complete darkness and unable to see anything until the moonlight illuminates the villagers.
12. The villagers are smart. In later levels they get smarter. For instance, if you shoot at one, it won't continue to go towards you. It may run away and if you follow him, it could purposefully lead you to an area where 6 more await with bow guns. They are more human.

1. They game can be played in first person or one of two new views. They are basically slight variations on a close third person camera.
2. It must be viewed in widescreen. If your tv doesn't support the 16:9 aspect ratio, the game will feature black bars on top and bottom of the screen to make sure you experience the game to its fullest on a 4:3 monitor. HDTV users, the game supports 480 progressive scan. This is needed because,...
3. In 3rd person, Leon fills the far left side of the screen. It feels like you are playing a first person shooter even withour Leon on the screen.
4. Controls are them same as before. However, health and ammo will now be onscreen.
5. Even with the old controls, the new views make it feel like an entirely different game.

- More ammo and bullets for the majority of the game.
- More weapons such as uzis.
- GC is very easy to work with, but low memory is a problem sometimes.
- Mikami believes that RE 0 didn't sell well since it had a zero in the title, and wasn't really going anywhere with the story.
- 2004 in Japan and U.S.
- No multiplay.
- 10 hours long.
- The Difficult is directed by the player; for example, if a player goes through an area without taking damage, there'll be less bullets in the next area.
- Some sort of crazy twist at the end of the game; Mikami only stated it was still horror.
- Mikami has nothing to do with the movies.
- No CG; all in game.
- Description of a river scene on a wharf with jumping fish. You can target and shoot at the fish, but then a huge monster jumps out and swallows you whole.
- Other vehicles to pilot.
- Leon can catch on fire.
- Chainsaw dude = homage to Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
- There WILL be some indoor environments.
- No Door Animation.
- Sniper rifle is in, but you can't set your own traps.

At the end of the day, it is a game, not real life. I used to share many of the same complaints, but Im rather fond of the old RE mechanic. You get used to the controls, but even then they are more complex than standard 3rd person controls to make intense zombie situations hairier. The fixed camera angles, while not realistic, further build the anxiety. The game, wherever it is, is just one big puzzle, and the inventory management is another aspect of this puzzle.. especially when you can't drop items (though you can in RE0).

I like that Mikami has moved to first person. It actually fits the existing mechanics quite well, while innovating at the same time. I still can't see what is behind me (like most 3rd person games), I still have problems with some hairy situations.. but now I can aim.

I'm pretty excited for RE4.. I just wish somebody would leak or release some movies already. :p

Because you haven't read the impressions of the game? :) Seriously go and read them, some of the stuff you mention is answered in their.

The game is very different to past Res Evil games, in fact I've heard a lot of Res Evil fans say that its far too different. I like the sound of it though.

Sounds like BioHazard will be exciting again !

Couldn't stand that stupid idea of keeping the old games feeling by keeping things that were in only because of hardware limitations, kinda like not evolving to me...
(the lame doors animations in the DC and NGC versions, the lame inventory system, not being able to drop stuff...)

Some excerpts I hadn't heard, or read yet:

-You still use herbs & sprays to replenish health

-Must avoid laser tripwires?

-All the major enemy appendages respond realistically to assaults from the front, back, left, or right sides

-You can hear the people talking when you approach the village (in spanish)

-Can use the action button to hide behind trees.

-Binocular viewing reveals real-time cutscenes, at times you zoom in/out in real time.

-Villagers have use of chainsaws, sickles, pitchforks, axes, etc.

-You have access to grenades, & can even blow-up the pictured cow

-Multiple vehicles.

The pure darkness level full of torch carrying yokels, really reveals nothing until the sky illuminates. Nothing like mob inspired terror, this is quickly moving up my GOTY console candidates. I haven't anticipated a title like this since HL2. My apologies if the info is old, the 10 hours is a typo also I believe.

Actually, regarding the plot. The story is that the villagers are in the primary stages of their zombie metamorphosis. Hence the ability to think, plan, ambush, etc. The Umbrella Inc. is still very much involved, to what degree & for what purpose has yet to be revealed. Perhaps an altered different virus that somehow slows the change, regardless we will again see zombies in this game as it progresses. Likely day/night cycles. As I said earlier, 9 more months of dev. time.

Is this done to save fillrate? Will it be rendered at full resolution on 16:9 TVs?

Squeak:

> Is this done to save fillrate?

No, it's to make room for your character in the left side of the screen.

> Will it be rendered at full resolution on 16:9 TVs?

Presumably yes.

What? This has to be a bad april fools joke.

You WILL have mutated beasts, and also some kind of black/blue 'mist' that can bring anything to life (Say hello to mr killer Teddy Bear 8) )

It's a fair cop :)

Seriously though, some of those changes sound like plus points, some seem like a step backwards (or at least a step away from the game I want to play). Other stuff seems unchanged (they're *keeping* the control system?!)

I guess I'll see how it pans out - I still consider myself a fan of the series, I just got very very disheartened by the lack of development and increasingly rediculous plots. If this gives the series a shot in the arm and does something different then I'll be happy to part with my cash - it's just got a lot to prove now...

I could also joke that us PAL users have been playing capcom titles with letterboxing for years...
