Apart from your image quality(FSAA), i disagree. Xbox games look pretty close to screenshots, apart from the super uber crystal clear resolution.
Well, it depends what you mean by 'looking pretty close'.

Sure, if you looked at the game in those screenshots, and then looked at the same game in your telly, could still recognize they are from the same game.

What's the point of this thread again? Stir up a flame war again? Someone looking for attention again?

You forgot about the textures and IQ, something which selected and reworked screens dont show. ;)

I think its agreeable that Bouncer and GT3 are amongst the best looking games on PS2, no contention. Too bad those are far and few.

uhm... no. Update yourself. There are plenty actually.

Lets see, overall PS2 level eyecandy > BGDA, Soul Calibur2, Dark Cloud2, Burnout2, LoTR:TT, JD. I give you MGS2/ZOE2/ICO for artistic presentation and effects.

Other than those, the average PS2 games dont look that much of a leap over DC as Sony promised.

I love it when Sony people are quick to say but..ut we have more p0lyg0nS here!!! Sure you do, but what if many of those more polygons are "ugly" polygons!

Please dont mention games like RRV, FFX, Primal, Getaway, Ratchet&Clank, please. They are good in some ways but not all ways.

GC August 2000+

(screens snipped)

Impressive with potential, at the least Nintendo didnt promise the moon this gen.

Er... that demo was running on the GC devkit hardware (the one with the faster Flipper / slower CPU). It wasn't prerendered.

I thought that the Zelda demo was a mock-up of what would be possible on Gamecube? Like the Raven/mecha demo on Xbox.

Missed this.. :p

Sorry TTP, but quoting MGS2/ICO and fillrate doesnt really justified the Kutaragi's hyperbola

oh, no. They do.

So tell me, what level of "emotion synthesis" and "far-sighted non computer quality graphics" did MGS/ICO/SH achieved?

Just because ICO can smile and shrek does not mean it HAs taH EmOTion SyNthesiS! And a hacked rain scene means FILlM QWuAlitY graphIcs?

Last i heard, PS2 main strength is its raw polygon power.

Going by that, does that mean 1000X the PS2/Moore Law too slow/BB Engine = 10.00X PS2/We meant HooreLaw, you know as in whore?/BB internet rockS!?

j/K!

I didnt say it was prerendered. ;) Part of the Rebirth one was though.

It's a name, a marketing strategy. My god, do you even watch commercials? The world is full of them. Microsoft has "better CPU", "3 times superiour GPU" plastered all over their website.

This thread should be closed. This is bashing at its lowest. May I remind this is Beyond3d - not TeamXbox or any other fanboi heaven.

That is why this is a topic specially created to relive all the "interesting" hyperbola abuzz of the past!

Anyway, you did not quote my edited part!

I was sceptical about that in the past(due to bad HS2 experience), but loooking at present and latest Xbox games, im not sure.....3X visually certainly dont sound far fetched on Xbox now.

The Zelda demo (before it was celrenderized) was realtime. Anyway, if you've seen Metroid Prime, I don't see how you could doubt the ability of the lil cube to do a Zelda like that entirely realtime.

Btw, when Tag says devkit hardware with slower CPU/faster Flipper, she doesn't really mean that. :) To my knowledge, the fastest Flipper ever ran in the early devkits was 150MHz and now it is what, 162? CPU was 300MHz if I'm not mistaken. 200MHz flipper was the target for RELEASE hardware, specs were changed before devkits were updated to reflect the final specs.

Can't someone hack a cube to see if the CPU/Flipper multiples are changeable by modifying some SMDs on the mobo or something? I'd really like to see a 200MHz Flipper in action. :D Maybe it's enough to change an oscillator though, but then we better pray the CPU can run at 600MHz... Somehow I doubt that. Might be worth a try though; bring on the peltier coolers, hehehe!

It's not about whether I doubt it or not. At this point in the game it's irrelevant, as the comparisons between systems can be made as easily as me turning on my TV :p

I do remember hearing that a part of the presentation was pre-rendered. I guess it was the natural scenery one, then? Oh, and the Metroid one, of course :devilish:

Common Chappers, where's the comments that support your comment of:

Not just Toy Story, but Hollywood quality effects, 50X the DC, technologically supreme for 6-8 years, polygons are useless, supernode for entertainment network, all words from Sony themselves.

"We want to propose 'emotion synthesis,' " said Ken Kutaragi, executive vice president and co-chief operating officer of SCE, who has led Playstation R&D.[/b] "With this keyword, we want to realize the generation of emotion by calculation. We want to bring emotion that moves people into the real-time entertainment world."

Kutaragi seemed to use "emotion" to refer to everything not fully expressed in the graphics technology of current game consoles, including the movements of nature, of humans and living creatures. Such graphics technology would create a world as involving and impressive as portrayed in movies, he said

Ok, where does it state Toy-Story like graphics? Emotion Synthesis? It's a catch-phrase for what you've seen in MGS2, SH3, FFX or any upper-tier game that has very fine meshes applied to characters faces and are used to express emotion graphics, as you couldn't in the previous generation.

These comments doesn't seem to bear out "Not just Toy Story, but Hollywood quality effects, 50X the DC, technologically supreme for 6-8 years" comments. So, you holding them back, common Chap.

Another cool pre-PS2 quote:

"Graphics-chip vendors in Silicon Valley today are all doing the same thing. They are obsessed with the polygon race. Their Research and Development goals are so near-sighted that they are only paying attention to gradual changes in graphics technologies that can be developed in lockstep with the short-term PC product-development cycle," said Kutaragi.

According to Kutaragi, "Today's videogame graphics look like computer graphics. Our goal is to achieve a film-like graphics quality that won't make viewers conscious of or annoyed by the fact that they are indeed looking at computer graphics." And for that to happen, it will take a major re-thinking of how visuals are produced. One which may very well mean and end to the polygon.

Isn't that everyones's goal in the Videogaming market? Who doesn't want to create film-like graphics quality? Where did he state PS2 explicitly?

Beyond that, his comments seem more geared towards the PS3 forward with non-polygonal rendering - which is inevitable at some point in the future.

So, lets go Chap - I'm waiting for the quotes that you promised.
