Post ya favorite hyperbola days of prelaunch system, any systems!

Let me start of with the Playstation Hype (i need to patent that statement) !

Quote of the millenium.

"We want to propose 'emotion synthesis,' " said Ken Kutaragi, executive vice president and co-chief operating officer of SCE, who has led Playstation R&D. "With this keyword, we want to realize the generation of emotion by calculation. We want to bring emotion that moves people into the real-time entertainment world."

Kutaragi seemed to use "emotion" to refer to everything not fully expressed in the graphics technology of current game consoles, including the movements of nature, of humans and living creatures. Such graphics technology would create a world as involving and impressive as portrayed in movies, he said

An interesting powerpoint..

Another cool pre-PS2 quote:

"Graphics-chip vendors in Silicon Valley today are all doing the same thing. They are obsessed with the polygon race. Their Research and Development goals are so near-sighted that they are only paying attention to gradual changes in graphics technologies that can be developed in lockstep with the short-term PC product-development cycle," said Kutaragi.

According to Kutaragi, "Today's videogame graphics look like computer graphics. Our goal is to achieve a film-like graphics quality that won't make viewers conscious of or annoyed by the fact that they are indeed looking at computer graphics." And for that to happen, it will take a major re-thinking of how visuals are produced. One which may very well mean and end to the polygon.

I need to find all those unveiling/launch powerpoint.

*Blows magic moderator-summoning whistle*

Could one of you newly-appointed guys pick up this piece of trash and take it outside and this time make sure it STAYS there and doesn't sneak back in again? I know it's unpleasant work handling something as disgusting as that (its diapers don't seem to have been changed for WEEKS), but quite frankly, somebody's gotta do it. You did voulenteer after all.

*G*

Well, Vince wanted a link to PSHype, so i figured it is better to start a topic on console hype. Kinda make it fairer to other consoles. Everyone has a chance to dig out the dirt of prelaunch hype, of any consoles.

Fair?

Actually I kind of like this topic. Man some of those quotes really bring it back... I'd love to see similiar stuff from Dreamcast and even Saturn, n64, and PSX hype.

I do remember the n64 = SGI workstation. CLASSIC!

MGS2
ICO
SILENT HILL 2 (and 3)

In fact PS2 is know for its impressive fill rate hence impressive management of special effects. Just look at MGS2. It's not about polygons, but SFX. "One which may very well mean and end to the polygon." Kutaragi never said that. That's speculation by the article writer.

Sorry TTP, but quoting MGS2/ICO and fillrate doesnt really justified the Kutaragi's hyperbola, unless of course people are willing to take a big cutback.

Anyway, let us look at old tech demos!

As it stands, Bouncer is still the top looker on PS2. Strange that they used to be able to capture really nice PS2 images back then.

Those PS2 demo screens represent just what we are getting in games today.
That Tekken image was done realtime in Tekken TAG (Launch game).
GT3 Concept actually looks better than the racing game demo shown.
I cant' believe how anyone could understand Sonys 'emotion' in games, as anything else than more expressive game characters and environments

Those xbox pics aren't too far from reality either. If anything, the image quality in games (all platforms) is even better (AA).

Looks like Nintendo and Sega (with DC) (Edit: and of course MicroSoft with that robot-girl demo  ) have been the worst hypers, and not delivering what promised with the final hardware.

Well, Xbox is looking far closer to fulfilling its CG quality graphics promise than Sony's. :p

Sure the AA ingame is not perfect, but games look very very good in motion, more so when you add motion filters.

Chaphack: NO xbox game shows near that level of detail or image quality, you must know that.

Texture quality and model complexity in final xbox games are far below that shown in those pics. Not to mention lighting.

At least the preview images Sony releases are very close to what you'll see in your tv screen. Sure, Jak II pics might be higher rez than final game, but polycount and lighting effecect are not artificially bumped up.

MS releases too much 'concept images' of future (and even released) games, that are clearly pre-rendered in high-end machines and software. Those pics are just rendered a little lower quality, so that thy might just pass as 'real xbox game images' (for example, a little AA and lower resolution textures added here and there for believabilitys sake etc...)

You forgot about the textures and IQ, something which selected and reworked screens dont show. ;)

I think its agreeable that Bouncer and GT3 are amongst the best looking games on PS2, no contention. Too bad those are far and few.

Apart from your image quality(FSAA), i disagree. Xbox games look pretty close to screenshots, apart from the super uber crystal clear resolution.
