Ratchet and Clank [PS4]

I am nearing the end of the campaign. As a first time R&C player, I really like the crazy weapons, although I have mostly focused my upgrades on Pixelizer and Protoclast. "Mr. Zurkon is here to kill" line always put a smile on my face.

Dude, Peacemaker is the thing ! It kills !

am still so hooked to this damned game ! I thikn I have bought all Omega versions now, including the RYNO. Just one gold bolt left !

[looking at this screen, I can hear the sounds of Sonic rings :D]

BTW, how do I upgrade health of Ratchet?

I dont care about the rings! I miss the good old sheep transformation gun! :D

That gun should still be in there? Certainly it was in the movie trailer :p. I am actually different from you guys in how I respond to the graphics. The first proper PS3 R&C had a bigger impact on me. Here the animation and graphics just seem to be what you would expect in this day and age, and doing better as Pixar movies do by not targeting realistic scenery. I don't actually feel technically that much stands out. If it would have been 60fps, or of the lighting would have been better (I feel it could have had better HDR), I would have been genuinely impressed. Now it's just really good. Which is great, at 35 euros a must buy.

My son is finding it quite a challenge though. The game has a fair few 'on rails' like challenges with very strict fail states. Not a fan of those myself but easy enough. Stress him out though, I always get the controller handed over ;)

or of the lighting would have been better

I disagree, lighting and shadowing are some of the best we've seen this generation so far. Multiple light source casting different shadows, characters always casting shadows onto themselves and the environment. Not once Ratchet seems off in the environment because of that. Few examples:

It is. Cant you see the sheep behind the rings? :D

I finished it yesterday. Probably shouldn't have taken the RYNO to the last boss battle. That thing melts health bars like butter. Overall a lovely game. Shame it's a bit on the slight side. If it hadn't been bolstered by all the collectibles and upgrade mechanics, you'd probably fly through the game in less than 2 hours. It's like a handful of medium-sized encounters and you're off to the next planet. You barely get enough time to play around with all your toys.

Sony and Insomniac make a triumphant return with a first outing on PS4 for ‘Ratchet & Clank’, the first in the series to debut at No1.

The game debuts just a few days before the movie (UK release date is 29th April). The game series began back in week 45, 2002 on PS2 with ‘Ratchet and Clank’ having held the previous best week 1 for All Formats chart postion (No15). In terms of week 1 sales units the record was held by 2009’s PS3 ‘Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time’, but the current release beats this by a factor of 3. Bandai Namco’s ‘Dark Souls III’ drops to No2 after 1 week at the top (-80%) and EA climb 9 places to No3 with ‘Star Wars Battlefront’ (+177%) – of course this is also the week where ‘Star Wars The Force Awakens’ arrived on DVD/Blu-ray.
Nice!

Interesting, didn't feel to me that way, did the original have more content?

The original had 18 planets. This one has 11. Granted, some of the planets have been expanded ever so slightly, and the air-to-air combat in your ship is new as well I believe, but most of the planets (and your objectives) are basically identical.
It is a very slight R&C game. Scope-wise it's more comparable to something like Into The Nexus than to the likes of Tools of Destruction or A Crack in Time. It's perfectly fine given it's retailing for just slightly more than half of what you're usually paying for a PS4 game, but now that I've finished it, I wouldn't call it a bargain anymore either.

Hopefully the success has paved the way for a proper sequel in the not-too-distant future.

Excellent news! Hope that secures a future title with a full blown brand new story and planets to explore, or did I mention with a bit of extra Neo bolts too:).

Ah that explains the price then, i haven't played any other R&C game so i don't know, this seemed fine in terms of content but i didn't have anything to compare it to :)

Perhaps this is Insomniac's new business model? Smaller games, cheaper, with less risk and more market evaluation ahead of more/longer titles.
