R580+

R580 = rev. A22
R580+ = rev. A31

so... ATi stopped production of A22 and replaced it with A31 revision?
Yep. Any R580-based SKU will have A31 'R580+' from now onwards, including X1900 XT 256, etc.

Didn't know there was a definition of a core revision. And there's no evidence to indicate that GDDR4 support was tweaked in silicon since R520.

R520's memory controller already has the capabilities to support all current GDDR memory types, as well as GDDR4 which is coming in the near future. The design of the memory is such that it should scale to beyond 1.8GHz memory speeds over the course of its lifetime, which means that this memory design is likely to remain in ATI's designed for a few generations now; speeds in the order of 1.0GHz have already been achieved on R520.

Back when R520 was being conceived there were no actual GDDR4 production samples, i think.
Supporting a new memory technology always carries risks, and bugs get fixed in every core revision.

It's no different on CPU's.

They wouldn't have done another spin if they didnt' have to, but anyways whats the 31 mean, don't remember, first was for metal layer and second number was for modification or visa versa?

Ok first number is actaully change in the chip the second number is metal revision. So there was a change in the chip but what change not known lol

since this is only a rumors thread....

The new rev/spin of R580 was to add DX10 features.

ATi decided the R600 was just to powerful right now and instead just further evolved the R580 architecture with added DirectX 10 features. :devilish:

They tried to fix whatever kept them short of 700mhz on the original core but it was unsuccessful & they are stuck with 650mhz again ?
