R420 Performance leaked

The way I see it is that no matter what R420's gonna deliver, NV40 is already a great product. Almost all of my expectations are realized in NV40, there're even more I didn't dream of.

it was tested on the PCIe ? Look at the top/right logo ... if so .. PCIe is same crap as AGP 8X .

No. Those numbers were most likely marketing projections and not actual figures. Also remember that this was done during the height of ATI's alleged "misinformation" campaign and could be projections for the 8 or 12 pipe configuration, not the 16 pipe XT.

just never forget that PCIe is not simply a next agp, but a replacement of the full pci system as well. it is by no means crap. it is a pci that is that hell-good that it allows to have gigabit cards in for network, gpu's that needed special agp till now, and much more.

is it just fud, or rant, that you posted?

I believe he was referring to 3D performance on each bus not the additional features and functionality of the PCIe interface. And from all appearances PCIe won't provide any significant boost a la AGP8x. And how can it be FUD when everybody is moving to PCIe by year's end? What is he casting FUD on?

Yeh i know this is not the same thing as AGP 8X at all but i mean for the speed .. i dont think we'll notice any important performance gain on a game not designed for the PCIe.

RainZ
Well, given that most modern games are specifically designed to avoid heavy use of the AGP bus during play, you are correct.

From that slid it looks like the new card is 75%-90% faster than a 9800pro.

But is that card an older 420?

as we won't ever see any gain of having a dx9 card in your system that can do huge pixelshadings if all you do is playing counterstrike, or quake3.

new features need software support. todays engines try to work around bottlenecks. they obviously don't use readback features till now simply because ati and nvidia "forgot" to implement it fast in hw (its entierly doable.. 3dlabs p10 shows it). and of course, they try to fit their app to the current agp4x and agp8x standarts.

games are simply NOT scalable, except for fps and resolution.

but believe me, there are yet quite some apps (in gaming direction:D) in development, that require PCIe. and they look stunning (while hell slow on a gamer card today). i just say RealTime Global Illumination (Full RealTime Radiosity and Full RealTime Soft Shadows of everything onto everything) with all goodies of today (doom3 with real lighting :D).
