PSP ??

i'v just read that! holy canoly macarony!

at last some healthy competition for the handheld market.

imagine ps2 quality games on a portable.
(what would be cool if those could be even better on the PSP)

One word: WOW!

Some more words: What about raw performance? Battery life? With high-performance processors and a discdrive memory (which wouldn't actually have to spin all that much really) in that thing, one would expect playtime to suffer. Else a really big battery would be needed which brings me to my third point: size. How big will this thing be? GBA SP is truly portable. If the PSP is much bigger than the original GBA it won't be (bad flashbacks of Atari's portable miserable failure).

Wow... I bet Nintendo is crying just this second upon hearing about PSP...

love the name too (PSP)...

But that's not all; PSP will include a USB 2.0 port for connectivity with other devices, such as PS2s or other PSPs, and a Memory Stick slot in place of a PS one or PS2 style Memory Card slot.

Could this mean that an USB 2.0 port will be in PS3 too??

Huge news, that's for sure. The biggest E3 announcement thus far. Ken Kutaragi just talked about it on their press conference, and showed miniature 1.8GB disc it will be using.

Don't know, clock speed is still T.B.D. So can't predict Battery life as either. but its on 90nm process, and its a one chip solution with eDRAM. MIPS base. Probably the early incarnation of cell.

The size of disk is 60mm, that's small. It will probably the size of SP, with similar folding mechanics. The screen is 4.5" 16:9. So that's could be a hint.

Optimistic - Cell based
Pestimistic - EE+GS@90nm

No matter, I'm sure Nintendo just dropped a hot, steamy load in their collective pants. +1 (B USD in Revenue) to Sony.

EDIT: Perhaps this really is Cell-based. They seem to have some big ambitions concerning interconnectivity for this little sucker...

I could do without the graphic descriptions when I'm just about to have dinner, Vince. :D

Anyway, I want that 6cm 1.8GB disc in MO format, re-writeable as a floppy replacement for my PC. Now THAT would be something worth writing home about!

Flash memory can never compete with the floppy, they're too small to begin with and too bloody expensive too! 1.8 GB, now that's something worth talking about... What tech is used to squeeze in that much data in such a small disc? Standard DVD with more layers?

-Graphics specs are also impressive: NURB technology for rendering with full 3D polygons.

-The unit's widescreen LCD screen (480x272, that's the coveted 16:9 ratio we all love) will be backlit.

-The unit's sound processing will feature full 3D sound, PCM, and will be "fully reconfigurable."

-MIPS 32-bit processor.

-Also, a secure ROM cartridge for anti-piracy efforts.

-Super-one-chip solution for graphics, sound, etc.

-Memory stick.

-Rechargeable battery.

-CPU: 90 nanometers with a clock speed TBD.

-USB 2.0 connection for talking to your PC, cellphone, even your PS2.

-Embedded RAM.

-Supports additional video codecs (other than MPEG 4.)

Don't think it will be quite PS2 quality (32-bit MIPS based) but better than PS1. Sweet! Now thats what I call an E3 surprise. I guess all those rumors about new hardware were right

FUCK ME!

PCP is Sony's equiv of Nintendo's Crack (Gameboy/GBC/GBA)

We will all be hooked!

yeah I would expect this to be CELL based. 1 CPU core, and 1 or 2 APUs
clocked at 100-300 Mhz perhaps (wild, wild guess)

otherwise a EE+GS would be just fine.

Nintendo's handheld dominance is finally going to END.

like when Sega brought out the MegaDrive/Genesis :)

ok so its not going to be Cell based (perhaps PSP-2 will be)

but still, its going to be better than PS1.... perhaps even Dreamcast quality. holy fucking shit that is still GOOD.

Vince, they said 32 bits MIPS core so I doubt this would be the EE+GS@90 nm... I thought the EE's RISC core was considered 64 bits at least... ( two parallel 64 bits ALUs and two Vector Units )...

Who knows... it might indeed be Cell...

I don't see how this couldn't be Cell based, Maybe a 90 nm version of Cell to fit a handheld.

It could communicate with PS3 also, since they are both Cellular with the usb 2.0 port Im guessing.

this is >> PSX CPU capabilities and they said MIPS based... I do not know any MIPS32 core that could have that kind of 3D capabilities... not alone and not without co-processors...

Wether it will be Cell or not it will be interesting :) ( PSP2 could have Cell and be released in late 2006-2007 to go along PlayStation 3... depnding hwo they play things out... )... this could be a MIPS based Cell chip ( with the PU being a MIPS processor )...
