PSP - is it worth it?

How many memory sticks/how much memory do I really need?

I bought a 512MB stick for $60 last week, then saw dell.com selling the 1GB Sony sticks for $95 and bought one of those, too. I planned to return the 512 stick, but would I be better off keeping it?

I'd like to store a good many photos, MP3s, and movies, so the more storage, the better. But perhaps I'd do better to return the 512 now and pick up another GB stick later, when I need it, and by then it may be cheaper, too.

Decisions, decisions...

Are you sure you got a DUO 1GB memory stick for that price? Because that's pretty bloody good if you did! Link?

I just shelled out around US$80 to get my 512MB memory card... curse australia's high prices. At most places here it's more around the US$130 mark.

Would there be a fee for you returning it? If so.. I may take it off your hands.

Yep, I'm sure it was a Pro Duo. It was on Dell's web site for about a day - someone had posted the link both here (I think) and at other message boards. No doubt they sold fast.

Nope, no fee for returning it, but I'm leaning toward keeping them both anyway. What the hell, they were both decent prices.

By the way, I loaded a few MP3s and photos to my PSP last night. My first time trying, and I was impressed with how easy it was. Just plug in both ends of the USB cable, turn PSP on, go to "USB Connection," and the PC recognizes PSP as a removable drive. From there, I just copied stuff over and goggled at how cool it was to see photos I took on that sweet PSP screen.

This is my most favorite toy ever! :p

I dunno, but I'm seeing on web sites like EB where they're selling Pro Duos on their "PSP Accessories" pages.

And here's an official 411 on PSP and Pro Duos:

http://www.psp411.com/show/review/80

Shortly after we began reviewing the SanDisk 512MB Memory Stick PRO Duo (PRO Duo), the company came out with its line of gaming line. Being the only portable gaming device that makes use of the PRO Duo format, the Sony PSP is the obvious target for this new line of sticks that are available in 4 capacities and 4 colours. The 128MB is Pink, the 256MB is Orange, 512MB is Green and the 1GB is Yellow...

Well then who was it that came out with that thread on how Pro MS's don't work on PSP a few weeks ago?? :devilish:

That is me and it wasn't a pro duo . Its a memory stick pro .

Seems they have to standards

Memory stick / pro which is longer and doesn't fit in the psp

Memory stick duo / pro which is half the length of the normal stick and fits in the psp and the old cameras and what not with a special attachment that makes it as long as the old stick

L-b i'm not a mod in that forum but don't paste the penny arcade pictures in the threads . just do a link so that pa can get payed and don't loose money for hosting the picture here

As predicted, PSP has me doing things I had no interest in doing before - like converting video and taking it with me on the go.

Last night, I ripped my Evanescence DVD and converted it to MP4 format (via RaPiZ) while I slept. This morning, I have 57 minutes of kick-azz concert footage on my PSP!

It took 330MB of my 512MB Memory Stick Pro Duo, but I'll be in better shape once my 1GB stick arrives. :p

If there's a cooler gadget than PSP, I honestly don't know what it is.

cool indeed. though i really can't get sony's market strategy sometimes for the life of me. i spent the past 1h in attempts to make my openMG _sony_ software to output atrac3-encoded stuff to my _sony_ psp with a _sony_ magicgate stick. zero success. foolish me.

a q/a chat session with the us product manager John koller..

i personally found some of the answers extremenly dissatisfying. IMHO the corporate innertia* can kill this product, or at least cripple it, regardless of all the high potential it may have.

"The OpenMG is a full-function digital audio manager. You can use it to rip files, transfer files, listen to music, and generally manage your library."

that's what i found

so openMG-encoded atrac3 eeeh, is this special ?

the original openMG jukebox cannot see the PSP as a target device, you need the sonic stage bloatware if you are to do any atrac3 transfers to the psp. the special thing here is that it is possible to use the oringinal openMG jukebox to put atrac3s on the psp w/o any sonicstage nuisance after all. it takes an old clie and a duo adapter, though : )
