PS3 Test Unit

I wonder if there will be a limit to the size of the HDD we can upgrade to, like on the PS2, I think it's size limit was a 120gig.

Thanks, that's pretty hot! Nice, me like. Just 6 more months, then. If I'm lucky. :???: Ah well, by then, maybe I can afford a 1080p to go with it (right now, 720ps are just starting to get affordable - 32" for under 1000 euro)

That was an IDE limitation. I assume you will be able to use any current 2.5" HDD, given there isn't some kind of mechanism in place to prevent 3rd party devices from operating.

Its pretty cool looking machine. I can't wait to have one but it will probably take until the end of next year before I get my hands on that beauty. :(

I'm pretty sure Sony has already stated we can upgrade with just about any 2.5" drive and they won't be providing first party HDD's this time around. I just hope they provide the info we need, I would hate to buy a HDD only to find out it won't work.

ah that explains why they had tape on the ps3 during the VF5 showoff, it had the words "Test" on it.

Whats the biggest sized laptop drive out there?

I presume you mean biggest capacity drive? ;) 160 GB seems the largest (commonly) available. Such a waste to stick to 2.5" :( Isn't there the much larger capacity new technology on the horizon, with the perpendicular magnetic particle thingies? 300 GB might be readily available in a year or so.

Ah thanks guys, those are quite expensive when they get into the higher numbers compared to regular 3.5" drives. I wonder if we will ever require that much space, I suppose it depends on what kinds of video formats are allowed on the ps3 (atleast for me personally). I just hope the support of various video formats is better than the psp. I also plan on dragging most of my music collection over to the 60gig, but I should have no problem with that. Its kinda nice to know that with a hdd that size you probably wont ever have to delete your demos to make room for another.

Yeah, of course, sorry about that. :)

Well, hopefully it allows you to stream music and video. Then there is little need for any of it to sit on the HD.

I pretty much prefer having it all on this disc as my media center. My experience with the 360 and streaming media was not the best in this regard (over wifi) even with a 54Mbit Connectoin it's only enough (for HD material) when the sender stands right next to the box, and I'm not willing to use a wire there...

Yeah, I'm doing wifi on 360. Its hopeless, I can't get better than 1 or 2 bars, and it drops out ocassionally too (which means Live games are iffy). Its annoying enough that I'm buying a new HDTV for my bedroom, where the router is :p

So I recon the PS3's drive is 5400rpm? And hopefully, PS3 would support external USB storage devices. 3.5" HDD + cheap $15 enclosure = lots of money save.

In the FCC specifications it was mentioned that there was a SATA interface (probably BluRay) and a standard ATA interface. You won't need special drives, laptop drives should work fine.

I noticed the flap for the memory cards seems to close by an exposed magnet on the left side (bottom when vertical) ? That seems rather primitive...

It's on the bottom left side when horizontal and frankly keeping it behind a door is nicer imo than exposed slots that might hardly get used.

Oh, and yea, the thing is dang silent. Heavy though, quite solid and heavy.

I think the idea was to save money and add capacity, as laptop drives are more expensive and lower capacity...

However I wouldn't have thought it'd take too long before some enterprising peripheral company brings out a small enclosure big enough for a 3.5" drive which connects to the end of the PS3 and plugs into the existing HDD data and power connectors...

Which I probably should've patented before posting.
