LOL at everyone who thought the Xbox was too big and are now defending the PS3's size. It's too funny.

Maybe it's just me but I always thought people ragged on the size of the original controllers than the unit. Now those things deserved every insult they received :p

What got on my nerves about the XBox was that I couldn't put anything on top of it. Becasue it was so big it could only fit in certain spots of my little entertainment center.

People ragged on the controller but not nearly as much as the console itself. All people did was complain that it was too big and heavy. etc... So it's funny to watch people say "PS3 is big but at least it's pretty" since the size is no longer an issue due to the size shrinking Playstation logo being included.

I think you're still gonna have the same problem if not worse with sitting anything on top of the PS3. You'll also have major dust and finger print issues due to the glossy surface.

uhh...why would i put anything on the ps3 in the first place. never put anything on my ps2, i dont plan on changing things.

I would ass-u-me that he meant 'in game' as the disks spin very fast and do (indeed) get very hot!

Personally I think the convex design of the PS3 helps get the heat away from the components whereas the X360 has a concave design (and therefore the heat has no-where to go).

Just a thought.

Actually the Xbox doesn't really have a concave design. It's only slightly concave and that effect vanishes at the back of the console. the fornt of it gives the appearence of being more concave then it really is.

The Playstation logo also improves gameplay, but not as much as the Nintendo logo (which also improves visuals). The MS logo just makes everything bigger (including losses). :p

LOL you've been had. ps3insider is clearly taking the piss with a pair of photos of a mock-up PS3 inside a display case.

So, everything he says is junk.

Jawed

It's switched on..I've no reason to believe it's not a test or retail unit, given that they are out in the wild at the moment. If you prefer, though, just pay attention to the first source quoted (Gamepro).

I'm not worried about anything really, I can put the PS3 vertical or switch my 360 to vertical and put the PS3 horizontal. I've learned to cope with the fact I can't stack on top of these systems. Funny thing is I really liked that the XBox was heavy and it was so for good reason, probably the least talked about XBox feature, the break away controller cables. They probably saved many people some heartache over the systems life.

Bout the fingerprint issue, di you guys think Sony will give us a buffing rag out of the box :p

A box with some lights on. It's in a display case. Why would it be in a display case if it was a test unit?

It's in a demo unit, apparently. Hence the enclosure. The enclosure is ventilated also (you can see the holes for the airflow on the bottom)..it wouldn't need to be if the unit wasn't actually working.

Well, they did with the PSP, if I recall correctly. (I can't remember if I got mine elsewhere or if it came with -- I think it came with though)

PSP and PS3 have the same finish... but PS3 shouldn't really need one so much because you aren't exactly going to be holding the unit in your hands when you play it.

Would be kind of cute if they did include one though...

He does actually say it's inside a demo unit, later on. So if it's just in an office as a static movie player then fair enough. It'll be ticking over, I guess.

Are these the same people though?

I dare say much of the XB's apparent size was in being a boring box with some solid design. By being more curvaceous PS3 presents an illusion of not being as large, as largeness is in part a matter of perception. A big square box can look bigger than a bigger curvey box unless you have them side by side.

That's one way to rationalise it anyhow ;)

Who knows... There was so many people complaning about the size that it was hard to tell.

I don't think the curves in the PS3 design make it look or appear smaller. I think it makes it look bigger than the original xbox (and in reality it is). Imo I think the people that complained about the xbox being big, didn't really care about the looks considering how the PS2 looked in comparrison ( very box like). I think "looks" is an issue now that the PS3 is larger than the original xbox so that's what certain fans a fall back on. imo it's bigger but the shape is far mor eakward than the original Xbox and I think people will have trouble fitting it in component shelving just like they did with the xbox.

it can be rationalized many ways ;)

It's all relative. I think Xbox 1 and the original controller do look huge compared to PS2 and gamecube (which were out earlier). They also made little effort to hide the bulkiness. Since then, people's expectation has changed.

This gen, PS3 is slightly bigger than Xbox 360. Despite attempts to slim their profiles, both still look oversized compared to Wii.

IMHO, the difference in size between PS3 and Xbox 360 is not that great. Footprint-wise, Xbox 360 is smaller, but if you add the PSU and HD-DVD player, it's bigger. Weight-wise, PS3 is heavier. Asthetic-wise, both have their own followings.

Using Xbox 360 as a reference, what's unclear is PS3's heat dissicipation, noise level, drive reliability and stability. I'm also keen to know the performance of the PS3 WiFi and HDD. The former save me troubles from routing cables. As for the latter, I'm just picky about drives that's all.

All in all, I'm quite happy with the PS3 physical attributes so far if the rumors about noise and heat are true.
