Edit: So the report was for movie playback, it's likely while playing a game the PS3 could be a bit noisier.
From the gamepro report, I presume he was playing a game.

LOL at everyone who thought the Xbox was too big and are now defending the PS3's size. It's too funny.
The difference is, the orginal xbox was quite big, but also ugly.
The ps3 is big, but pretty good looking. Really looks like an expensive peice of equipment.
IMO of course.
I don't think it's appearence makes it look expensive, but that's me...
You can say that again. It wasn't until the Lite that I was impressed by much of the DS's design at ALL.I think appearence can definately make an peice of hardware look more expensive. The DS and the DS Lite for example. Overall the DS Lite just looks better designed, and more professional.
The reason is the fans in the 360 kick in to remove the heat created by the DVD drive.

Yup.. quite possible. I guess they need to show off the BD playback at TGS too, so maybe it's a special unit (or an early production unit).in tokyo getting ready for tgs, maybe he had a unit for a blu-ray demonstration in his office. What are the chances he has a final ps3 right now?
DVD drives do not create that much heat. They create a lot of noise which BD-drive certainly won't.
I would ass-u-me that he meant 'in game' as the disks spin very fast and do (indeed) get very hot!
Personally I think the convex design of the PS3 helps get the heat away from the components whereas the X360 has a concave design (and therefore the heat has no-where to go).
Just a thought.

Very impressive indeed to make a console silent at the time of launch with internal power supply. It would be nice to know how they actually managed to do that.
Well my 360 is pretty quite too until I put a game in it. He said he hasn't played a game yet?
Well thats the bit about which I shall proceed to sit on the non-electric fence.
I flat out refuse to believe it will run 29db while playing a game. Your average HDD is 30db idle as it stands. The laws of made up staticstics and numbers state it's impossible.
Again, I'm pretty sure the Gamepro guy was playing a game..
If the games are running off the hard drive, yeah it will be quiet. if anyone has run games or demos off the Xbox 360 hard drive you will notice it's a lot quieter then when you stick a disk in the unit. The reason is the fans in the 360 kick in to remove the heat created by the DVD drive.
If sony really managed to keep the units quite for retail, then more power to them.
