PS3 Test Unit impressions (noise, heat etc.)

LOL at everyone who thought the Xbox was too big and are now defending the PS3's size. It's too funny.

The difference is, the orginal xbox was quite big, but also ugly.
The ps3 is big, but pretty good looking. Really looks like an expensive peice of equipment.

IMO of course.

If the games are running off the hard drive, yeah it will be quiet. if anyone has run games or demos off the Xbox 360 hard drive you will notice it's a lot quieter then when you stick a disk in the unit. The reason is the fans in the 360 kick in to remove the heat created by the DVD drive.

If sony really managed to keep the units quite for retail, then more power to them.

certainly is opinion. I disagree, I think the look of the PS3 is ugly. I like the shiny finish of the unit, but as far as looks, I don't like the shape of it. I don't think it's appearence makes it look expensive, but that's me...

I think appearence can definately make an peice of hardware look more expensive. The DS and the DS Lite for example. Overall the DS Lite just looks better designed, and more professional.

There's no accounting for taste, they say. Anyway, I like the looks of it. It just fits really well together with my PSP(s).

You can say that again. It wasn't until the Lite that I was impressed by much of the DS's design at ALL. :???:

Someday, though... and someday soon, I hope! ...we'll have a clear-coat that can make glossy colors resist fingerprints! <sigh>

Edit: So the report was for movie playback, it's likely while playing a game the PS3 could be a bit noisier.

Which is still good news. If there was one thing that bugged me the times i happened to play DVD on my PS2, is that it was just as loud as it was when playing games, which is silly since for playing DVDs the hardware should be cooler than when it's trying to move 10Million polygons around.

On PS3, the noise of the drive when playing movies or games from Bluray will be negligible since the disc spins at a lower speed than today's DVD drives. Much like the drive in PS2, which was silent when a DVD was in it but VERY loud when a CD was in it. I still have nightmares of playing Tekken Tag. The thing sounded like an airplane was coming crashing down on my house...

I hope that it is as quiet as rumoured, as much as I love my 360 it is one noisey beast when playing a game!

That's something microsoft needs to improve in my opinion, especially if they want to push it as an all-in-one media centre.

in tokyo getting ready for tgs, maybe he had a unit for a blu-ray demonstration in his office. What are the chances he has a final ps3 right now?
Yup.. quite possible. I guess they need to show off the BD playback at TGS too, so maybe it's a special unit (or an early production unit).

Cheers,
Dean

DVD drives do not create that much heat. They create a lot of noise which BD-drive certainly won't.

I would ass-u-me that he meant 'in game' as the disks spin very fast and do (indeed) get very hot!

Personally I think the convex design of the PS3 helps get the heat away from the components whereas the X360 has a concave design (and therefore the heat has no-where to go).

Just a thought.

Good point!

Very impressive indeed to make a console silent at the time of launch with internal power supply. It would be nice to know how they actually managed to do that.

Well my 360 is pretty quite too until I put a game in it. He said he hasn't played a game yet?

Well thats the bit about which I shall proceed to sit on the non-electric fence.

I flat out refuse to believe it will run 29db while playing a game. Your average HDD is 30db idle as it stands. The laws of made up staticstics and numbers state it's impossible.

You can get HD's quieter than 30db in use. Silent PC Review has a list of a couple of pretty quiet HDs here which are under 24db (at 1m distance) when seeking.

My 360 is nearly dead silent while playing movies or sitting in the dashboard. The fans don't spin up unless I am actually playing a game, and yes, it's less noisy while playing from the hard drive than it is playing a game from the DVD drive.

I would expect the PS3 to be equally near dead silent if all it's doing is playing movies. There is no reason why it should be any louder than any standard DVD player when performing that function.
