PS3 Slim Hardware Confirmed

Guys stop with the Netflix derailing, this is the hardware thread for the PS3.

Just found this info.

While our tests were far from thorough, the initial results from our quick-and-dirty decibel ratings show some promise. With a baseline of 49 decibels, the Slim averaged 53 to 56 db when in use / playing a game / installing data (in this case, Metal Gear Solid 4), compared to the 55 to 58 db of the original. Blu-ray movie playback is where it becomes noticeable, as the slim peaked for us at 60 db when the original was doing 70 db running the same disc.

Someone slip a wattmeter under their door please. I can't believe we have a measured noise level but no power draw figures yet.

There's definitely no power brick - you can see this in all the unboxing videos, and IGN even said there wasn't.

As for power consumption - I know wikipedia isn't the most reliable source, but their numbers are inline with what I remember reading from articles when the 80GB PS3 was released.

From wikipedia:
90nm Cell / 90nm RSX (20GB/60GB) - 170 - 200w
65nm Cell / 90nm RSX (40GB) - 120 - 140w
65nm Cell / 65nm RSX (80GB) - 90w - 120w
45nm Cell / 65nm RSX (Slim) - ???

My guess is it's 33% lower than the 80GB model (despite the fact that Sony said off of "the original"), making it around 60 - 80w

The only measurement that's bigger is the depth, it's both shorter and slimmer (looking at it vertically) and weighs considerably less.

The one dimension is 0.6" larger, but overall it's much smaller than the original and 360 (especially considering the PSU).

Do people really stack things on their consoles? How many things are on your 360 SB?

I've got my dedicated DVD player on top of the X360 as it's the smaller unit. And my Wii sits on top of the DVD player. :p

Sounds like a RROD waiting to happen. :) I've always had my 360 vertical and sitting on a non-enclosed shelf on my entertainment center with enough air surrounding it to keep it cool.

I stopped being paranoid about it long ago. It's an original launch premium unit and still going strong.

However, that said, I keep hoping it'll die somehow so I have a good reason to break the budget and get a newer model with HDMI. Unfortunately I seem to have gotten the one that was built like a tank.

I think this has been said before but I quite dislike the way the slim looks. I liked my touch sensitive buttons and the shiny finish as well.

I won't be suprised if MS saves their slimmed version for Natal for next year (probably even with a new name)

Also after seeing the Zune HD, X360 Slim should look quite stylish if they hire the same industrial design studio.

As for PS3 Slim, I think it looks ok, the matte finish definitely makes it look cheap though. I would've preferred a flat black rubbery finish like the kind used on Logitech's illuminated slim keyboard palm rest.

The new PS3 also doesn't look so good standing vertical, the exposed underside looks unattractive. I guess that's the tradeoff to having a non-symetrical design.

Nah I like the clicky buttons. I have a Sansung with the touch button you can't really tell if you pressed the button and it didn't work you didn't press hard enough or what. It's really annoying.
