[PS3] Resistance 3 [SPOILER ALERT - Contains R2 story discussion]

Yeah ! It was a nice game we had there, though I am still learning the ropes.

Earlier I was thinking that the game feels pretty simplistic sometimes, but then that is why its so easy to enjoy in it. But playing with you guys, I realised there's lot more in it like turrets and bubble shields and saw someone running around as a Ravager ! That seems like a cool combo of providing a game thats very easy to get in and conquer but has a lot of stuff to provide variety once you have spent time with it.

Will play more to see if it all works. The Seaside Map looks awesome but that COD like blur is a major letdown. 3 years making the game, I was expecting they would be able to hit 720p this time around, but looks like it was never on their priority list :( !

Yes, R3 is actually pretty complex. Too many options for my taste, but there is a hardcore mode. ^_^

I heard the SP game looks noticeably better. The MP final code is also more polished than the beta. Just a couple more days and we will see the real thing.

Someone got R3 early:

Whoa, son. Don't take my Brewers from me!

First, I completely blow at this Move stuff. I died three times before switching to DS3. Maybe my next playthrough.

Installation cinematic is aces. Well done, Insomniac.

Game looks very nice in motion. I didn't play the beta, so I have no basis for comparison, but the first chapter in Haven looked very nice. I'm not a pixel-counter, though, so I may be more forgiving than others.

Atmosphere is very reminiscent of RFoM. It feels literally like you against the world with deep odds against you. I love the geysers of blood following a headshot, very nice effect.

That's all for now, back to playing.

Up to Chapter 8. Fucking weapon wheel has saved my life on many an occasion.

James, give my personal best to your co-workers. Tremendously fun game so far.

5 more days !

Yes, The Boat demo never felt so blurred and low res at all ! Maybe thats why I was so taken aback when I saw the MP beta for the first time. Hadn't expected the blur.

Also, the final maps in KZ3 had looked so much better than the beta, so I am hoping for the best here too.

Regarding MP, I don't understand the Chain reaction mode. Do we have to capture the nodes in a specific order? Can't we free a node once captured by the enemy?

How many modes are there in MP in the final game?

Yes, the beta is rough. ^_^

In Chain Reaction, there are 5 nodes to capture, starting with node 3. you always defend one node and attack one node. Say if you capture node N, it becomes the node you have to defend. In addition, node (N + 1) opens up for you to capture. The old defense node (N - 1) will become inactive. No one can capture that anymore until your enemy recapture node N.

Once you have captured all the intermediate nodes, you can activate the last node. It takes about 5-6 seconds to activate. Once you activate it successfully, the game ends with your team as the winner. If no one manages to capture any final node, the game will break the tie by summing the scores.

How many modes are there in MP in the final game?

4 modes and 12 maps. Not all maps support all modes.

EDIT: I think in Breach mode, you are free to capture any node in any order.

I played the Beta yesterday. Public team-deathmatch wasn't possible - we kept being putt in lobbies with no one in it and the message was always "waiting for more players". After waiting for a minutes, usually everyone left, so I was stuck alone waiting for some more...

At some point, I added someone out of the list who didn't get to play either and we did a private match. To my surprise it did feel very much like RFOM which is great - although I have to admit that things have moved on considerably since then. While I love the "run and gun" and that it takes quite a lot of hits to down someone, the mechanics itself feel a little outdated, especially after being used to KZ2 (I guess KZ3 too, but I haven't played that online really). The graphics are nothing special, at least the train level that I saw, but I don't really mind. I'd take great playability over graphics any day.

I've pre-ordered R3 already, at least for the SP experience and since I'm still pretty disgusted at how they ruined KZ3 MP (in my opinion) I may be back online for R3 MP. Although, with MW3 around the corner as of November, competition might be high...

There was some matchmaking problems yesterday. Today, Insomniac folks were working on the servers:

we're running some server tests... and the user count is crazy. We hit 4 times our previous high yesterday, and we're more than doubling that right now. LOTS of people on, and we're having to make some tweaks to adjust for the demand. Keep tryin.

Phil, like KZ3, R3 also has perks and abilities, perhaps even more. :devilish:
The main differences are:

* R3 is more hectic because you can sprint forever and jumping is more floaty (e.g., jump from rooftop to rooftop).

* Longer health bar means you can go out and fight in the open. May have time to react when someone shoot at you from behind.

* Rounds are very short, which makes a very good "5-minute break" game. ^_^ Warzone is like 30-45 minutes long.

KZ3 and KZ2 are more tactical.

EDIT: By the way, do you want a link to the GAF chatroom ? There are usually people in the room. People play BFBC2/BF3, U2 and R3 there. I know they used to play KZ2 together.
I have several R3 runs with them already. They are pretty good players, some definitely better than me. ^_^

Renegade_Rocks is there too.

Hey Patsu,

Yeah a link would be great. I thought I still had the link, but maybe it has changed? I've checked a few times (a couple of months ago) and all the chatrooms, the eGAF and the normal one, as well as the 24/7 PS3 chat or the b3d chat were always empty. I wouldn't mind being included in some matches and I still know a few GAF players from the KZ2/RFOM days.

About R3: It definately feels more like RFOM which is great. I also like that the graphics are more similar to RFOM days - more bland, which I like. About the connectivity problems - I expected as much. I was just happy enough to find someone to play with and have a few private matches to feel the mechanics and level design. Although I only played two rounds, the impression is quite positive.

What isn't, is as I said, a bit of the technical stuff. It feels very jerky to me, at least compared to KZ2/KZ3, which, although 30 fps, were very smooth in how you turn in. That may be due to the 'added weight' in the controls, which RFOM lacks, so movement might tend to be a bit more jerky because of it. The only other FPS that I've played that is rather twichy is MW2/BlackOps and they're both super smooth 60 fps. I don't think RFOM was better at the time (than R3), but I've just become used to other shooters that are more smooth, which is why this may feel a little outdated to me. It's perhaps something you can get used to and live with though, although I did suffer a bit yesterday (I have a very big screen, which may highlight the jerkyness further).

I noticed the perks and I have to say, although they are there, I don't care much for them, because the gameplay is less tactical, so they have less potential to ruin the gameplay for me. Because of the added health compared to the other shooters I play, I feel I can down anyone regardless what perks they are using. More importantly though, the perks seem to be fun - I think the "fake double" could make for some funny moments in a heatet fight and because you have more health, you never feel cheated as you have the possibility to run for cover if you must.

Can't comment much on level design yet. The train yard reminds me a lot of the bus station in RFOM which was a great level. Only the size was a bit big, considering we were just two players. Also wasn't able to test many different weapons - only had the Auger at some point and wasn't quite sure on how to quick-select between weapons. Is it like RFOM again or can you only hold two weapons at once? I always had more than enough ammo, so didn't really care to notice what the secondary weapon is.

Sent.

I think it was the eGAF one but they started a new room (for reasons unknown to me). You should be able to find 2-12 people in the room 24/7.

Insomniac has acknowledged a few bugs, including occasional jerk/stutter. A fix is underway.

I am surprised you didn't find the perks distracting. :devilish:
At first, I kept complaining about the shields.

The decoys and doppelgänger are indeed confusing. ^_^

You press ^ (triangle) quickly to toggle weapon. Hold it down to open up the weapon wheel.

This game doesn't seem to have abuzz around its release, nobody, except Patsu, on my friend list is playing R3 Beta :( ! Compare this to R2 BEta when everyone was vying for codes to try out the 8 player co-op and the R2 thread was ablaze. Now its just 3 guys here !!!!

OTOH, after playing the Beta, I really want the co-op back  ! I would love to mow down Chimera a$$ in these new beautiful maps !!!!!! Maybe they can add some simple Socom4 like custom campaign thingie as DLC or something. Oh, please do, Insomniac ! I love me some co-op bashing the dumb AI !

Ha ha, people got burned by R2 it seems. That's why I build up the XMB chatroom. ^_^
There are 10 or so R3 beta testers there but they are not all online at the same time. We intend to grow it some more.

*If* R3 is as good as the preview and impressions indicate, then we should see more players jumping back in. Demon's Souls suffered 9 months of anonymity until word spread.

Co-op using R3/RFOM mechanics would indeed be awesome. I think Insomniac needs time to implement the campaign and MP properly this time round.

I don't see it :(

I could make a US account, but I'll probably just wait for the game to release..

Go to "New this week" for the latest stuff, and there's a red-and-white R3 icon. There's a separate one for the game higher up than the trailers. It took me a little looking around to find it. Downloaded and installed, but not tried yet.

There will be a new SP demo on launch day.

And yeah, I see a few more B3D people playing the beta now. ^_^

The previews are streaming in slowly too:

JPS Resistance 3 Hands-On Preview:
http://www.justpushstart.com/2011/07...ds-on-preview/

Although we only had 60 minutes of gameplay time, Resistance 3 is shaping up to be a very action-packed title. The pacing is so fast paced and there’s never a dull moment. You’re immediately forced to fight for your life and it really gets your heart pumping the moment you first pull the trigger. I cannot comment whether it’s looking to be better than its predecessors since I have not played them, however I do know that Resistance 3 is appearing to be one title all PS3 gamers should look out for.

Resistance 3 Hands-on Preview:
http://www.el33tonline.com/past_arti...preview_again/

Based on the preview build I played, Resistance 3 will be a superb addition to the PS3’s growing library of exclusives when it releases next month. The series already had a unique identity, but the latest entry strengthens its position as a stand-out FPS in an increasingly overpopulated market. Gamers looking for an epic shooter with high production values, rewarding gameplay mechanisms and some of the most exciting weapons in the business need look no further than Insomniac’s latest offering.

Overall the graphics are ok, but the map Seaside has ultra ugly green gras...the green is just to...green

 The final MP game will be more polished, but should retain the same level of green. You haven't played KZ3 MP haven't you ? There is a map there that's more green than Incredible Hulk. And I'm talking about the entire screen. ^_^

There's a R3 MP demo in the EU store.

I'm thinking they should probably give us a new MP demo based on the production server. The current beta server and client code are rather rough. The core game mechanics are there, but there are bugs and intermittent stutter. It's a different branch from the production code.
