[PS3] Resistance 3 [SPOILER ALERT - Contains R2 story discussion]

Developer blog on how Insomniac design the boat level:

Designing the boat level for Resistance 3 was an interesting challenge in many ways. It’s a short traversal on-rails level (well, sort of on-rails) wedged between two high-action core-combat parts of a first person shooter. Thus, our goal was for it to be a break in the pacing of the whole game that focused more on emotional and visual storytelling. We needed to make sure that the whole level team was on the same page about the player experience we would be attempting to create when we started full production on the level.

At this stage in the project I had the level roughed out as far as the order of things the player would encounter on his boat ride, but setups were very roughly mocked up, most of the art was graybox, there was no music, minimal sound, and the team was focused on solving some tricky technical challenges with the traveling-on-a-moving-platform element of the level. Basically, you had to stretch your imagination REALLY far to feel the emotional beats we were envisioning.

I think you'll be disappointed then, IG seems to do their games in 1280x704 or what it is...
That isn't sub-HD any more than 2.35 cinematic widescreen is. By the official definition you could say they aren't hitting the 720p lines of HD, but then 600x720p would technically be HD, so the definition clearly isn't a very good one. Letterboxing changes aspect ratio, but the game isn't rendering and upscaling which destroys fidelity, so where the aspect and FOV is being changed, the resolution fidelity isn't. You still get 720p fidelity. No-one in their right mind should complain about a missing 8 pixels top and bottom in a 720p rendering when it makes sense on so many levels, and certainly branding it with the same 'sub-HD' badge as some of the seriously reduced resolution games out there is disingenuous.

Sub-HD is sub-HD, and if that's what R3 is doing then it's fair to point that out (and yeah, that screenie shows serious horizontal upscaling). That's quite a different fault to very minor letterboxing though, so the distinction needs to be made.

 Wow, I mean, is it even in subhd? Without HDR, or high buffer at 30 fps with no AA? I'm really doubtful to that engine... what have to do of so special to require subhd? The lights system not appears nothing of special, look so artificiall & surely prebaked (godray & palette of colours indeed it remind me to some ps2 game)I know sounds pretty lame, but I found resistance the worst graphic for a first parties game of sony (ok ex sony). Fixed about deferred mode...

jstevenson mentioned something about proprietary server tech and then refused to reveal more. May or may not be related to the PSN Pass rumor. We shall see !

Supposedly somewhere in this thread:

We've re-engineered a lot of the server / online back-end to some new proprietary tech that I can't go too in-detail about at this point. We should be able to say more once things are rolling on the beta.
