So it´s 84megs + some more?
Depends on what the game uses I guess. If the video-chat is only in the lobby before starting a game, and the game than disables that, it could use that memory for something else ingame.
I know I hated that console-online-crap before, and now even more so. The only thing thats usefull for me is the 5MB for saving/loading.

Wow! So I guess this is how it works...

Required

- Onscreen keyboard = 7MB
- Saving / Loading / Reading = 5MB
- Online startup = 8MB
- NP Friend list = 24MB (what the f***)
- voice chat = 8MB
- video memory = 32MB (what does it do?)
TOTAL= 84MB

Optional

- Video Chat = 26MB
- Utility for microphone config = 8MB
- Web browser = 40MB to 90MB+
- PSP Remote Play = 8MB

Innerbits have a new blog entry on the OS memory requirements for firmware 1.60.
I absolutely love this line on their 'About' page...

We will absolutely never ever post any insider information that would violate any NDA.

Not sure how they explain the blabbering about FW 1.60's memory usage, based on that.

I guess the friends list pre-allocates enough room to hold several MILLION player names all loaded at once into main memory? Because how 3else could it possibly require so much memory?

Same with the onscreen keyboard (7MB WTF? does that include a freaking dictionary or something?) and audio/video conferencing..

Seems to be humongous bloat on a system that never had a terribly hueg amount of RAM to begin with. Truly a non-optimal situation..

Peace.

Couldn't they design a smart OS that allocates a certain amount while playing a game and a larger amount for when you are doing everything else?
You won't be surfing the net or listening to music while playing your game. I can understand wanting to give you the ability to multi-task but couldn't they anticipate a bit more logically and realize that there are certain combinations of tasks that just won't happen at the same time.

Erm no... Thats not how it works.

I believe the 32MB of VRAM is reserved for video streaming (especially real-time game asset streaming) to preview the games you have loaded on the PS3 HDD or disc drive while in XMB game folder. If this information is creditable and factual

These are SPU programs ? If so, they can be loaded/unloaded dynamically. If using some sort of SPURS framework, these tasks can probably be scheduled and run on the same SPU too.

That 24Mb friend list is huge though. Does it include some sort of Home components ?

but the lack of an explicit cap concerns us.
There's no explicit cap in XBox360 either - and every 360 game demonstrates it clearly by dropping framerate to hell if you bring up the dash. I never saw anyone complain, let alone feign "concern" about it.

every game I have ever played on 360 just pauses when i bring up the dash (as I would prefer it to).

after selecting a friend to chat with or whatnot, i am back in the game with no loss and chatting away.

I have to say though that in terms in-game OS interaction of smoothness, the interaction with the X360 doesn't match the smoothness of PS3, even though the options offered by the latter are much less. When you bring up the dashboard, it clearly has a certain jerkiness to it.

FWIW. It's always irritated me :)

If your going to allow the game code to keep running with the interface up, your at the mercy of the application to give you enough time frequently enough. In the end it doesn't materially affect the experience, even it makes me cringe.

Not all of them do, and regardless of pause or not, when dash is up, FPS goes to hell (and with it, responsiveness of the dash interface).
Anyway I'm not saying it's a big deal or anything, just that it's exactly the same thing that all those blogs are so concerned about on a Sony platform, where it doesn't happen in any game(yet).

Indeed, it's kinda like if a game has an accidental slowdown in menus - it won't have any material impact on how it plays, but it inevitably gives a bad impression.

As long as sufficient memory is returned to the game, I see no problem.

I'm still waiting anxiously for the final user experience. I much prefer the game to pause (not possible on MP ?) when XMB is activated in-game.

More worringly I can never figure why the dashboard framerate sucks when nothings running? Quiet often I've noticed the tabs juddering in the dashboard and just thinking wtf?

And yeah iratates me as well in game... juddering always sucks.. just yukky.

Part of the framerate issue is I believe related to some of the on the fly decompression and compositing they do to keep the memory forotprint down. It probably leads to a lot of Renderer synchronisation and stalling.

So if someone wants to make singleplayer only game [looks @ HS] I hope that they dont need to spend so much memory on OS. I mean why bother with Keyboard [7mb], Online Startup [8], Friends [24], and bunch of other stuff???
