PS3 OS/Interface

Thanks,

Great vid, looked like a bit of jiggery-pokery going on with that demo, it appeared as if the tv switched video inputs when Phil Demo'd the PSP remote play and started the game.

Bit worrying if the interface is not complete yet, how can they start building the final units if the firmware isn't ready?

I assume the video feed automatically goes to 480p when in psp remote connection mode. Everything should show up on the psp screen so theres really no point at rendering everything at 720p/180p when the psp's screen is 480x272. 480p would put it at about the quality of the UMD movies, which is pretty good when displayed on the psp.

I think he was just noting that it wasnt finished. And it will never be 100% finished just like on the psp, its always being updated via network updates.

That crossed my mind but I wouldn't have thought that would be necessary, could be though.

I took it to be a bit more than that, rough quote from Phil as follows

I'd like to take the opportunity to show something that we weren't able to show at the Tokyo Game Show

What we are showing you is not complete and that's why I would rather that you didn't take pictures of it as it's not the final image that the users will be getting in a couple of months time

Yeah I guess it could be interpretted both ways, maybe a disc is shipped with the ps3 to install the firmware, which wouldnt have to be installed during manufacturing. who knows.

Bad_Boy, the "Players Met" feature, I imagine, would allow you to see the list of players you've played against online recently. Xbox has a similar feature called "Recent Players".

Yeah, that does make sense, thanks for the explanation. I kinda thought it might be some Sony TM'ed type thing, the logo/icon next to it didnt really look like anything I could identifty. Then again, neither do some of the other icons.

but yeah, ty. :)

Erm ... that's ... unlikely.
There surely must be an easier way to get the latest firmware flashed onto the darn thing before handing it off to customers. There's really no reason to expect that whoever builds those PS3s would have a problem upgrading the firmware while at the same time a customer could easily do it.

I'm pretty sure my PSP came with a disc that included later firmware than was on the machine.

I would think it's a lot easier for them to slip a new disc into the packages rather than flash the machines - especially once the stock is out of the factory and being shipped (possibly internationally) then sitting on shelves.

So probably not all that unlikely.

Agreed. All they have to do is make sure that the new firmware contains stuff that everyone wants, and the firmware to be replaced doesn't contain any essential vulnerabilities that enable all sorts of naughty stuff ... (Linux could help to prevent that also ...)

Okay, I stand corrected. Didn't know that they do it that way with the PSP. I don't think I'd like that, but well, perhaps the end-user hassle is justified by the new features.

Fallback plan: some working version of the firmware will already be installed when you first open the box. Who's with me?

yeah of course. I mean from the looks of it they could ship with the firmware they were demonstrating at TGS if all the core stuff is up and working. Its similar to the 1.5 firmware on the psp, which newer games cannot run on so the game discs come shipped with update firmware for people who cannot download it online. 1.5 firmware wasnt complete but they still made it work by shipping the psp with it.

lets say the ps3 has a 1.0 or 1.5 firmware, they could still ship with the possibility of including the discs with say a 1.8 firmware. As long as its not like a 0.8 firmware or something I dont see why it would be a problem.

it's nice to see sony pushing the good XMB iterface further. it seems this generation both sony and nintendo have a lot to offer UI-wise, taking embedded interfaces to completely new functional and ergonomic levels, demonstrating a nice fusion of aesthetics and functionality. for some time i thought it was all lost as the world was largely falling for the ugly windowing-me-too, desktop-styled-everything dogma, heavily backed by some, erm, desktop companies, largely known for their amputated creativity.

The official Japanese site is up. It show the PS3 OS Menu:

Did they change the "Friends" icon to a different one? In the video where Phil Harrison demonstrated the XMB at TGS, I recall the icon was different (two person silhouettes one bigger one smaller like).
I liked that icon more, now the "Friends" and "Users" icons stand out too much from the rest of the icons as if they were a different style and design.

The friends icon is the same one from TGS Phil showed off. The PSM3 video of the interface on the other hand was the two person silhouettes. Which led me to believe they were showing off an older firmware/build of the OS. There were a couple differences between the videos.

Thanks for the translation again hupfinsgack. :)

Oh yes, it was the OPM3 vide it was different. I remebmered wrong.
Edit: What's wrong with my typing today :???: I blame the monday!

At the CEATEC 2006 electronics expo Sony shows PS3 with the remote and XMB.

As a sidenote, this year Toshiba shows "Markerless Motion Capture system SHADOW" in which Cell reads human silhouette and gesture like EyeToy and its sample game (Since Toshiba's Cell Reference Set doesn't have GPU another computer does graphics rendering).

From Oct. 9 Sony starts showing playable PS3 at its showroom at Ginza, Tokyo, then Sony Style stores in Osaka and Odaiba along with other Blu-ray products such as BD recorder, software, and PC.

OK, nobody is mentioning this so:

Good news for anyone who owns a PSP and may be purchasing a PS3. Sony is currently demonstrating several of the Playstation 3's features at CEATEC JAPAN 2006, a consumer electronics convention currently taking place in Japan.

Sony has been demoing the Playstation 3's "Cross Media Bar" interface, which if you own a PSP, you're already familiar with.

During the demonstration, Sony showed an icon under the Playstation 3's "Network" menu called "Remote Play." As you can see in the image below, it clearly depicts a PSP. Sony has also confirmed that you will be able to use the PS3's integrated WiFi functionality to "throw" the PS3's video signal to your PSP. Details were found in Game Watch's coverage of the event. So not only will you be able to use your PSP to control your PS3 games, you'll be able to use your PSP to see your PS3 games.

It should be noted that because only the 60GB Playstation 3 model includes integrated WiFi, this function will apparently not be available on the 20GB model.

This feature may just be one small component of Sony's implementation of DLNA on the Playstation 3. Other possible (as in, we're just guessing) implementations include being able to watch movies from the PS3's Blu-ray/hard drive on the PSP, and being able to watch UMD-Video on the PS3.

Update 1: We may have spoke too soon -- Famitsu's coverage of the same event presents a different story. They say that "Remote Play" will be used to, and I quote, "download Playstation 3 content to the PSP." That's a bit different from Game Watch's take, so I suppose we'll have to wait and see.

So GameWatch claims that everyting can be transfered to PSP [even games], but Famitsy is telling a little different story... What do you think?
Does anyone hear read Japanese? :)

And check the DLNA report for PSP. Will PSP/PS3 connectivity work like this?
