PS3 OS/Interface

Detailed look at the interface:
http://plusd.itmedia.co.jp/games/articles/0610/18/news008.html

edit:
-The web browser supports Java and Flash Player (like PSP).
-11 languages are available.
-When you insert a music CD (authentic one) PlayStation 3 will automatically grab the info from CDDB (if you're online).
-PS3 start-up music will be similar to an orchestra's tuning sound before they start playing.

"Install Other System" (install Linux?)

Custom resolution is very important, it's necessary for playing 1080p movies on 16:10 1920x1200 PC monitors that can't do dot-by-dot display such as the 24-inch BenQ monitor with HDMI.
Yeah that does sound important, that BenQ is one nice monitor as well. I was wondering, could you translate anything out of those two articles that we did not already know about? Much appreciated if you could. :)

Oh nothing particularly important there, but some points anyway

+ loading a BD video = under 10 sec
+ AAC, MP3, ATRAC supported for the CD ripping jukebox
+ System language settings already include Japanese, English, French, Spanish, German, Italy, Portuguese, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian etc.

It's too blurred for me to see anything. Could be accessing videos on PSP memory stick (USB or WiFi ?).

EDIT: Woah... lb and one are faster. Must be getting old :(

Thanks one, that makes sense.
Guess I was jumping to conclusions with the encoding movies part.
Hasn't this been mentioned before as an app? I expect it's something PS3 could do. If you can rip movies to HDD, and they have some integration with PSP, and want more people to buy PSPs, it's a 'no-brainer' to provide a quick (thanks, Cell!) scale and encode and output onto either PSP directly or Memory Stick. I guess the media video jukebox thing will have this ability (and please God, let it be written by a totally different team to the bunch who wrote the official PSP movie ripping software!).

Yeah, I see no reason why it wouldnt be possible, Cell should be a beast at encoding a movie for the psp, just we havent any type of confirmation of that AFAIK.

Hmm... I thought it's just ripping music to HDD. Where does it say ripping movies to HDD ?

i remember a video of the XMB showing where it clearly said upload movie or somthing like that.
but yeah, wouldbe cool if we had confirmation about what they mean by that.

It has a WiFi connection and so does the PSP... LocationFree TV ;)

You should be able to transfer your home movies from a video camera at least.

The recently updated PSP Media Software 2.0b ($9,95, even if you've already bought the 1.0 version! Talk about ripoff (though I just bought it :D ) lets you "rip" DVD's to a format for PSP.

I'd guess the PS3 should allow similar conversion of DVD's for PSP.

Hmm... I was wondering how Sony got around the encrypted VOB/DVD files problem. It should be illegal to decrypt them under DMCA or am I mistaken ?

If PSP Media Manager offers DVD ripping, then I will also gladly "upgrade" to 2.0. This is definitely a royal change in attitude from Sony. I wrote a Windows "shell program" to automate DVD ripping (to PSP) using ffmpeg and DVDDecryptor more than a year ago, there are still flaws in video conversion using these tools. If Sony can offer a superior converter, then it is definitely worth a mere 10 bucks.

EDIT: OTOH, if PS3 does offer LocationFree TV like feature, then it should allow the users to digitize their movie collection so that the user can pick which movie to watch from the HDD (instead of watching the same one in Blu-ray while on a trip). Anyone has more info ?
