One developer says the PS3's a pain, another says it's not. You take the "pain" route, speaks a lot...

Hey, that rhymes :)

My chat with smapty. She works at Ubi.
Mmm... a cleaner at Ubi? :p

smapty: Imagine you having to write a 3-page word document.
smapty: The way the Xenon is built,. you can run a Word Processor to input your data
This made my day

If she's a real dev that I feel sorry for Ubisoft. :? Just read what DeanoC says and it basically makes everything she says look quite stupid.

And why is she SOOOO against the PS3 anyway? It obviously will do physics in a way that we as gamers haven't seen before in life so what is she talking about?

Ever hear of the term 'watermark'? X360 comes out a good amount of time before the PS3.

Well the PS3 will have its own games 1st party games. I was think about games like HS. DeanoC said that they are going to add in the new multithreaded Havoks engine.

G5 processor stronger in alpha devkit than xenon:D

It's already been used in Halo2 and Perfect Dark Zero will be using it on X360, in November 05. :D

Edit:
obviously not multi-threaded in Halo2 ;)

Anyone remember when the Cell was supposed to be a self contained unit with no need for a GPU?

There's a reason I came out and called the machine lopsided, it was deved to take care of both CPU and GPU processes, but they couldent get the yields they wanted, so they tacked on a GPU.

So what!! What's your point? The X360 has a GPU too. Big deal.

These threads usually have a ridiculously long lifespan compared to others, don't you think? ;) This is comedy gold. Too bad jvd's missing out on this one. :lol PEACE.

The X360 CPU wasnt deved from scratch to be a self contained unit.

What's that supposed to mean? :?
The Cell couldent hit anywhere near the yeilds it was supposed to, so the plan changed about a year and a half ago. Sony signed a deal with Nvidia and the rest is history. 3 billion dollars and one huge demotion later Sony is trying to pick up the pieces.

Well I agree to some extent. The PS3 does seem to have an unusual amount of repeated hw such as the function of SPE and the vertex shader inside the RSX.

The interface between RSX<->CELL is a bit of a curiosity as well. From what I can see, these inefficiencies only serve to make the unit more expensive to produce and that's Sony's problem to deal with.
Not any less powerful.

Ummm.... can't this "repeated" HW make this system better? More expensive? How about a great system. I can't believe you even halfway took Opa's side in this. Nobody else here will agree with what he's saying. It's a joke. I know he doesn't really believe what he is saying.

3 billion dollars? One huge demotion? Where did the 3 billion dollars come from? And the demotion will only help the PS3 not hurt it.

Again, to sum up, right now devs for the PS3 are going to have to try and get some REAL cpu power out of the SPE's, but again, it's pretty much like the Paintbrush/Word metaphor no matter how much elbow grease you put into it.

I don't think it's that extreme, you're acting like Cell can't be used for anything other than graphical purposes. The PS2 is a good example of another system built for graphical purposes mostly and it did perfectly fine. These are game consoles, not spreadsheet accelerators.
