PS3 HDD replacing/upgradeing

2nd try ! No succes same stupid error : 800283F0 .

I have backed up and restored stuff earlier too when my ps3 was replaced and didn't have any issue. This seems so fucked up and strange ! All my saves gone !

Add to the woe, I have already formatted the 40GB HDD that came out of the ps3, so can't try to backup again ! Woe !

EDIT: Save games are back ! but my PSN stuff and game data is gone ! Its kinda messed. will need time to figure out !

Which firmware are you on? I read some reports of OFW 3.56 causing issues in certain models with hard drive upgrades.

I think I will wait for Cloud Save in 3.60 to activate, then perform my HDD backup.

My previous restores all worked, but just in case…

After upgrading to a 500gig drive, I was continually getting the message "The restore operation could not be completed. The system will restart. (800283F0)" when attempting to restore from my backup.

I have just found that this appears to have been due to my PSP being registered to my PS3. Unregistered it, completed a backup, swapped in the new formatted HDD, restore completed successfully.

you may also find if you had any locked saves in that backup you did you will get that same error

I reduced the size of the backup by deleting all my installed games (except for PSN games) which reduced the total size down to 10GB ~15 mins of backup time.

For some ungodly reason this worked and I finally got my backup to restore without error…

All I did was stop the controller from going to sleep while doing the restore.. Mine was having the same fault.. Game saves restored fine but none of my game data was there (had 2 delete games because they would not open etc) redid backup pressing controller buttons occasionally so it would not go to sleep and had no problem I think when you shrink down the backup size it does not give the controller time to go to sleep so also fixes problem.... You should also be able to turn off the controller power saving setting and should also fix this so u don't need to sit through restore….

@Patsu: Thanx ! I had read all that before posting here. My previous restore when my PS3 got replaced had gone fine too, but at that time I had deleted everything except game saves as I didn't have a big enough USB drive.

Basically, the Backup utility is a POS ! Just like :

This is the exact case here. The backup utility said that the backup would be 13 GB and then when it was done, tht too after bloody 4 hours, it said the backup is 11 GB. It felt fine as I had my PSN purchases and Game updates for Uncharted 1 & 2 and Heavy Rain in there. But when restoring, the fucking "utility" restored only game saves, some pics I had and my themes ! For gods sake what was that 11 GB for?!!??! and it took bloody FOUR HOURS to backup just save games a themes ! and made an 11 gb backup for it !

I did some thinking, and I think the clue lies in this:
"These unregistered users were found and will be restored" (or something like that.)

I think , for some f*ck all reason, the backup utility might be thinking that this is not the same ps3 on which the original users were created and thus does not replace my purchased games ! It can't be , though, as PS3 ID can't be changed or mistaken by the software. But that seems to be the only logical explanation. It thinks, maybe, I am trying to restore the backup to a different ps3 than the one it was backed up from, so it doesn't backup content that needs activation. but that doesn't explain it not restoring my Funky Lab Rat demo!

Either that Or the backup utility is a pile of crap shit ! It took bloody 4 hours to backup - nothing !

Are those user accounts still in active use ? May be Sony has purged/deactivated them from PSN ?

Had you activated your account on the new HDD? That is, before restoring did you create your main account and go online and check the "activated" option to make sure it was? Because otherwise the backup will be seeing all this secure content and be being told this isn't the right HDD for this PS3.

TBH that shouldn't be an issue. The backup should check the PS3 ID number of the system it's being restored onto is the same as the ID it was backed up from, but it may be worth a try. Sadly Sony follows the principles of meaningless, undocumented error codes that don't help guide people to solutions.

Of course they all are ! I play from my EU account as PSN wasn't avaialabel in India when I bought my PS3, and buy content from my Indian account. They are very much still active. I signed into both of them just now.

Yes, since the hardware ID cannot get changed under any circumstances, I wonder how it can think it isn't the same ps3? And accounts themselves are also part of the system restore.

Anyways, it did not restore free content either, like my Funky Lab Rat demo or the game updates (HUGE game updates) of Heavy Rain, LBP and Uncharted 2. Which means the issue isn't about secure content or DRM, but some other fuck up on Backup Utility's part.

I really don't think the backup tool is worth the hassle. It's quicker and easier and more reliable to back up everything manually. Althought that can't be done with game data, can it? Meaning having to update. If Sony could just provided latest-version patches it'd probably be a lot quicker.

I remember I used the backup tool, and then copy as many items manually as possible too -- just in case. @_@

I recently upgraded my EU launch unit's 60GB HDD to 320GB Western Digital Scorpio Black (7200rpm, 16MB cache).

I bought a new set of screwdrivers and a pair of pliers, and tried to be very careful when removing the notorious screws, but still I managed to nearly destroy one of the screws due to a small slip. Other than that, the upgrading went like a charm. The backup utility saved all my files to external HDD, including copy protected saves, and to my surprise it even saved all my settings and PSN passwords. The backup file's size was 47GB, and it took roughly six hours (iirc) to save it on external HDD. Restoring it was much quicker process, luckily.

Finally no need to delete older files to make room for new ones. I've also noticed a minor speed boost in installing and loading times.
