PS3 + EyeToy vs Revolution

Do you guys think by using EyeToy, PS3 can 'emulate' Revolution-like gaming experience, like shown in the Lots of Ducks tech demo?

Of course, PS3 doesn't have the cool new innovative controller, but Sony could release something similar in the future as an add-on for EyeToy.

My memory's fuzzy but I seem to recall hearing the next EyeToy would basically be an HD-Eyetoy with infrared capable of easily capturing 3d depth. If so, and given the cell makeup/duck demos, it should not only be able to mimic it(given a good enough camera the cell should be able to follow the controller, that is it should be able to tell accel/position/movements/rotations of the controller, wands, hands, etc.), but exceed it.

A makeup game, or a ducky-like game, or any heavy-physics game would probably be impossible on revolution but possible on ps3.

Look nobody wants to talk about you smart, thoughtful, intelligent post okay. Logical thinking is banned for 12 more hours.

j/k

I think it could give Nintendo a good run for its money, but if it is not bundled with the PS3 then it will not receive as much developer support.

What the hell is up with Eyetoy games where everytime u want a new one, you have to purchase the camera? Its not like the games are more expensive or anything .. but maybe they won't be 49.99 if they sold the game alone. I have about 3 cameras laying around .. one from the original, another for anti-grav, and one more for some game I can't remember. There's another game I want to get, so get ready for another camera. They aren't the deepest games .. more like kiddie pool, but they are fun for a change of pace or to pull out when the kids are around.

I could have sworn I've seen the games sold seperately from the camera (because you can pick up the camera seperately as well).

You can buy the games alone.
Local video game shop do sell EyeToyPlay games either as a pack with the camera or as any regular game (ie alone).

I think it'll continue to carve out its own niche, not necessarily emulate Revolution. HD camera + Cell will hopefully open up its own potential. I can see a lot of nifty ideas coming out of Europe especially where it seems to be catching on pretty well.

What I think might be interesting to see alongside games built from the groundup for Eye Toy, is an additional layer of Eye Toy functionality for games also using the standard controller as its main interface. Using the Eye Toy as sort of a sidekick instead. For example perhaps a virtual GUI you can quickly manipulate with a free hand Minority Report style (say in a cockpit of a futuristic Mech game), or some kind of head tracking feedback in a FPS. Stuff like that.

This and being able to map your face on to certain characters in certain games would be nice too.

I think they've already implemented a simple version of this in a couple games like Tony Hawk and Sony's basketball franchise. An HD cam would obviously give greater detail in this area, but then you run into animation problems with the greater fidelity. Maybe they'll get the code from that Toshiba demo. ;)

I still think the most exiting use for the next gen Eye Toy tech would be in online multiplayer games, especially MMORPG's.
Imagine if your character would get it's expressions from your face, imagine if your online avatar followed your gestures that you make in front of the camera.
Character "body language" would be brought to a whole new level, finally you'd be able to make all those rude gestures to your fellow gamers online! The interaction between characters would be unlimited!!!
And those military squad games fould be so much more realistic too.

the problem with the eye toy would be that you would constantly have to reconfigure it's position or your postion for different uses. for video chat you want a close up. for revolution mimicing you want full body sitting down. for classic eyetoy like applications you want to be standing up normally with half your body on screen. it just gets tiresome. with revolutions controller you just pick the controller up.

Well technically they could change that next time around if they wanted too.

yes lots of things are technically possible. a wide angle lens with a high enough resolution would do. then you can digitally crop for the close up usage. they don't want to be sending HD quality for video chat after all. have to wait and see tho, because cheaper less user friendly options probably will prevail.

I certainly didn't find any standalone copies of Anti-Grav. Maybe they sell only the game itself as a pre-played game in the Gamestops. I live in SF .. I was looking at a new Eyetoy package (the one with the boxing and baseball games I think) and I asked the person on the floor if there was a standalone version, and he said no. This is in the Sony Playstation store .. they carry a far larger library of games than any other stores since the entire store is dedicated to Playstations. I just did a quick search online for Anti-Grav and did not find 2 separate versions for sale. Its no big deal .. the games are not anymore expensive, but strange. They were demoing Guitar Hero, so I picked one up. Good thing they sell the Guitars separately .. but I only bought one for now.

Maybe I'm just a bad shopper .. just walk into a store and buy whatever it is I went in for. Forget about shopping all around.

I'm really looking forward to the next generation of Eyetoy. Hopefully it will move beyond family party games and get into stuff like the Time Crisis arcade game where u have to duck behind obstacles to reload.

Thats a fricken great idea. You have a light gun and eyetoy2. When you want to duck behind something and reload, all you would do is going into a crouching position and the character onscreen would react (by taking cover)....

There already is a arcade game like that, is beutifull to play.

I want a eyetoy now being that you guys are talking about it so much. What game should I get. What am I going to like the best?

That is an example of the future indeed. You keep the anonymity yet your expressions get through.

Anti-Grav has been a lot of fun. Actually, most games won't hold your interest too long. They are just fun to pull out every now and then. That's why I'm looking forward to where they take this device. I want to try a new game pak I saw where there was a boxing game similiar to Punchout .. I think (I only glanced at it when someone else was playing in the store).
