Remember back in the old days when some games supported the ability to render at a higher resolution than displayed? Why can't the hardware render at some stratospheric resolution (basically SSAA right?) then resize the picture to display resolution. The PR people can use the Resolution Independance buzzword.
Because SSAA is much more expensive than MSAA. If that were an easy thing to do, devs wouldn't have to make the decision between 1080p and 720p today... they'd just render at 2560p and resample the image (SSAA).
