PS2 Third Age LOTR game - any good or pap?

I think I need another action RPG for my lil black box after Champs of Norrath and Demon Stone... Is this worth buying?

Definitely a traditional RPG, and yes it will remind you of FFX more than anything else stylistically. It's still pretty good and fun on that account, but the storyline won't tell you anything much but what you already knew from the movies--just from a "different angle."

It's still fun and looks great, though, but I don't think it's worth owning. Give it a rent--there's probably not too much replay value after you finish it. (Though on that point I have no idea. I just can't imagine them choking their game with "other stuff" the way Square does. ;) )

Ok, so regular RPG instead of action. Well, is it any good for a regular RPG then? :) I find the FF games to be annoying and derivative for the most part these days, maybe a western-made game can turn things around.

It's not even a regular turn based RPG, it does indeed copy FFX fight system, and overall progression, but that's about it. There's no NPCs, no villages, etc...
Also the game is awfully easy, you level up almost every 2 or 3 fights, after a few hours(3 or 4H) your party is something like lvl 25.

If you're looking for a good "action" RPG, try Star Ocean 3, which is far, far better than LOTR:TA, IMO. There's also Tales of Symphonia for GC that's about to be released, it's not the best Tales of for me, but an excellent game, nontheless.

Whatever you do, forget Third Age, or at least give it a rent if you're really interested.

Isn't the point of RPGs, playing to progress the story, which is supposed to be unknown, at least the end...?
6 billion people on this planet already know the LOTR story and many of them are already tired with it.....

Depends what you find "annoying and derivative" about the FF games, really. Third Age may not be annoying in the same directions, but it's DEFINITELY derivative--I mean, the fact that every cut-scene is plucked from movie footage will tell you that. ;) I didn't see through the whole game yet so I can't tell you about the entire storyline, but it amounts to a "funky alternative" as far as I've seen--a party following in the footsteps of the Fellowship but not actually meeting them. Some of the stuff they're presenting is interesting, but certainly not mind-blowing, and it probably won't change the concepts from the films to any large degree.

It seems to be more low-key as far as an RPG goes, but if you have fun with the films and with RPG systems in general, it's certainly worth a go-through. It looks great and has a distinct Tolkien flavor, isn't dubbed by morons, and at least has a TINY bit of co-operation to it in case you plan on playing with a friend or significant other, so hey. :)

Ok, looks like I should skip this game then! Anyone knows when Star Ocean 3 is coming out in Europe? I haven't seen it on shelves so it must be a while longer.

It's on two DVDs, right? Dual-layer or single?

Hope they come up with a new storage standard before we get Phantasmagoria-like games on seven discs for our consoles, hehehe... :)

Well there's always people who never get tired of collecting stuff related to whatever they're fans of, and this game is clearly aimed at them (as with any blatantly obvious milking of a brand).
The rest of us can wait until someone starts making games based on the rest of tolkien books, which easily provide more material for this type of game (or an 'epic' RTS, for that matter).

If you really wanted an FF killer, something like Story of Beren and Luthien practically begs to be used (wonder how much the license would be worth though).

Edit: cthellis42 pointed out the spelling mistake. Brain working way ahead of the hands...

This one is definitly out in Europe

Peter Jackson is so in love with EA LOTR adaptations that he has decided to refuse that EA take care of the VG adapted from its forthcoming King Kong. He has given the licence to Michel Ancel and its BGE team.

I like the game. It's like FFX without all the bullshit. I particularly like that the male protagonist doesn't look like Meg Ryan. :)

The graphics are substandard (EA-PS2-'nuff said), with the exception of some great particle and full screen effects (see above: EA-PS2-'nuff said), and I'm playing it on hard difficulty because I was told it was too easy and it's a lot more challenging that way.

I just rented it and put about 10 hours into it and finished about 25% of the game. I'm going to buy it when it drops to $30 or less and finish it.

You american F-ers get games at discount... Here it takes a million years for console games to drop to $30-equivalent level, or else it's 2nd hand (and invariably end up with a scratched DVD box and crumpled-up manual etc). Lucky bastards! :D

Will keep an eye open for Star Ocean 3. Would be cool to have a 'proper' RPG again to play.

A common misconception, that's actually an adventure you're describing. A RPG is supposed to be about different things, it might not even need a story at all. Its just that the term RPG has been associated with certain gameplay elements and people tend to call a game a RPG whenever one or two of those elements are present, regardless of wether the term is actually fitting otherwise...
