Sony sold 33 per cent less units of the PS2 in Japan during the first half of 2003 compared with the same period in 2002, according to new figures published last week which also show the GameCube making gains.

According to the figures, which were reported by Bloomberg, the PS2 sold through 1,085,560 units in the first six months of 2003, which compares with 1,620,239 units in the first half of 2002.

Previously I thought Sony might not be in a rush to bring out PS3 if PS2 was still selling well, but that's apparently not going to be the case. Of course there's other logistical issues, but I think they'll want it out as soon as possible to keep their cash cow producing :)

If the PS2 is reaching saturation, I don't know what should be said about GC and Xbox then.

This is due to the price cut that happened last year IIRC.

Let them cut the price a little bit more ( which they can do and still make money from selling the consoles ) and the sales will spike once again :) ( still they are not doing that bad )

even IF they needed to rush PS3 because PS2 isnt selling enough (which (1) is not the case as we all know (2) they wouldnt rush anything just because PS2 isnt seling enough units), they could rush whatever u want, however there's that LITTLE detail...... PS3 is NOT going to be ready for a long time. whether they rush it or not, if the technology isn't there yet, they can only rush so much.....

but we all know Sony doesnt need to rush anything. if anything, they're in the position to delay PS3 so they can get it right for launch.

Console manufactures make most of their profit from the games - as long as they have enough units in the market place and sufficient copies of each new game are sold, they don't need to rush out a new model. In fact, it may be counter-productive.
