pre-X06 MEGATON precognition chronicle

For me ,an xbox fan, this show had its ups and downs.
Ups:
1)Splinter Cell 5-xbox360 console exclusive. This is megaton news right there ,IMO.The SC franchise has been one of the best western franchises in the last few years and getting the first true next-gen SC title(developed by Ubi Montreal,no less) exclusive seems like a huge deal to me.After watching Assasin's creed i can't even imagine how great SC5 will look and play.Yeah yeah, the SC franchise has been loosing sales but pretty much everything that isn't Halo or GTA has been loosing sales.Plus i cant wait for the great SC5 vs. MGS4 threads that are bound to happen in every internet forum.

2)Bioshock:-xbox360 console exclusive.Another great exclusive for MS.I was a bit uncertain at first if this is a real exclusive but the take2 PR announcement leaves no doubts,IMO.

3)New Banjo. At last!!The xbox360 needs platform games and this is a 500k(in the U.S plus it will have some good sales in Europe) seller in that genre.

4)HD-DVD add-on at the right price and with the perfect movie to show it off as a pack in.Now the xbox360+HDDVD is a less attractive combo than the premium ps3 BUT for the people who ALLREADY have an xbox360 it's a great buy

5)Gears of War having a steady and much improved framerate plus looking amasing.

6)Assasin's Creed looking amasing and having the best in-game animation ever in a videogame.Yes,that might be a multiplatform title but it was a game that "couldn't be done on the 360" according to many a few months ago.It seem that xbox360 games CAN have fantastic animation, imagine that!!

7)RE5 is definately coming to the 360.(unlike what Egm had in a rumor mole).Lost Planet xbox360 exclusive(according to Peter Moore).Great relationship between MS and Capcom nowadays, that is definately good news.

8)Halo Wars. The Halo universe was screaming for a RTS and Ensemble is a great studio.

Downs:
1)Forza 2 looking mediocre(not bad just average). It will definately improve but still the game was supposed to come out inholiday 2006.Now it's delayed.
2)Nothing on Fable2.Sounds like its years before release.Meh(mind you that i really like Fable)
3)Only a small CG trailer for Banjo3.
4)No Too Human(another "supposed to be released at holiday 2006" at one time game)
5)Microsoft's line up for the remaining of 2006 EXTREMELY thin.Only GoW and Viva Pinata.Big mistake. They should have at least 2 more high profile 1st/2nd party games ready for this holiday season. They made a similar mistake with the original xbox. They have a good line up for 2007 wth games like Mass Effect,Crackdown,Halo3,Too Human,Forza 2 e.t.c(and i doubt any of these will slip into 2008) but they are missing an opportunity this holiday season.Bad planning once again.

To conclude MS seems more focused than ever. This new xbox360/games for windows policy that they seems to have made them more determined to secure many western developed games as exclusives to these 2 platforms and it's really like they hve 2 platforms on the market at the moment(xbox360&PC).Another plus is the blockbuster games they getting from Capcom. They still have to try harder in some genres however(like beat em ups, action beat ups).

I don't have any next gen consoles yet, but I will be picking up a 360 probably around November to play GOW. 360 will keep me busy with too many  great games coming in 2007. Then pick up a PS3 in 2008 when the price is nice and lower! :devilish:

What a fantastic time to be a gamer.

I agree!I was floored by its graphics,i didn't expect it at all(since the game is coming out on ps2).To me it looks better than FN3.The characters look amasing, with fantastic shelf-shadowing and tons of detail(plus they look great when they sweat unlike other sports games) and it has the best 3d crowds ever in a videogame. The close ups look mind blowing and so so do the entrances.BUT it has bad animation(totally last gen) and that takes away the impressiveness of the graphics a bit,IMO.

I thiink crackdown is scheduled for 2006 fulcizombie. In fact I believe it is scheduled to ship 10/16 at EB unless I am way behind the times.

Show was okay, some good some bad. Nothing mindblowing. No price drop no Halo 3 no Ninja Gaiden two no Killer Instinct.

Good: Gears, AC, HDDVD at 199.

I got to thinking though, how available are HDDVD rentals? I dont buy movies very often. I may pass on the HDDVD for a while then. I know it's a pie in the sky, but I wish microsoft could price it at $99. Then it becomes an easy purchase imo. Also since I'm worried about the format war, 99 dollars would be easier to stomach if I end up on the wrong side of it.

I really enjoyed Pitch Black, but the game was significantly better than the movie Chronicles of Riddick. That movie just seemed to ruin the good things PB and EfBB had going for them.

After all is said and done, however, I'm glad there was no announcement for Halo 3 natively running in 1080p. Next thing would have been 60fps to boot. I don't think the game needs either one, and if the game is going to be competetive graphics wise, I don't think it can afford the tradeoffs necessary there. Gameplay comes first, of course, and I'd play Halo if it were cel-shaded. (Which I would probably like, actually.... I've become quite fond of cel-shading after LoZ: WW) Halo finally going back to its original RTS roots is interesting as well.

Assassin's Creed Gameplay looks very interesting, and I'd love to play it. Mass Effect in those pictures in the other topic looks absolutely awesome. Add to that Banjo, and others, and I'm quite impressed. The Gears of War gameplay looked a little underwhelming, however. Trying to go in for the chainsaw might not have been worth it for all the hassle Cliffy had to go through to get it down.

I was underwhelmed with Gears too from the stage demo. But go to Gamespot and check their new cliffy Gears walkthrough thing. It renewed my faith. Cliffy is just holding back which is smart.

Crackdown has ,unfortunately, been pushed into 2007.Too bad cause i really like what i see in this game.

Expecting the HDDVD drive to cost 99$ was unrealistic.199$ with King Kong(an ideal movie to show off HDDVD and an HDDVD exclusive) is a good price,IMo_Of course cheaper would be better but it is still cheap FOR SOMEONE THAT ALLREADY OWNS AN XBOX360.

Oh and after watching the latest GoW videos,a video of the 1st level(looks even better than it did at E3) and a real-time cut-scene video,i am speechless.

Yeah, I've seen some of the stuff put up on Gamespot, gamevideos, etc. Truly good stuff. Seeing the cutscene intro where they meet up with the hard-ass, I can honestly say the Hulk in a suit look to all the soldiers is even starting to get to me a little.

Too Human

...Too Human, a third-person action game steeped in RPG elements and Norse mythology, had a rough showing at E3, garnering criticism for its odd camera angles, poor framerate, and average, linear level design. Microsoft quietly mentioned Too Human in its press conference, and only when prompted did it admit the game was delayed until Q1-Q2 2007.

While a handful of first- and second-party titles were delayed -- Forza 2, Mass Effect (originally slated for "holiday"), and Crackdown -- only Too Human was completely missing.

Microsoft admitted these titles had un-realistic release dates at E3. Microsoft Game Studios General Manager Shane Kim explained that while it's true, a handful of titles did slip, he doesn't want to release a game before its ready. "I'd rather delay it and give it time then ship it early."

The HDMI rumors still aren't dead yet...

More news on the HD-DVD front: the price of the HD-DVD option for the Xbox 360 system has been announced as C$199, bringing the cost of an Xbox package capable of playing back the discs at C$700. Curiously, the HDMI connection scheme uses a non-standard cable that would become available “soon afterâ€￾ the introduction of the player itself in November; but at additional cost. Without HDMI, users would have to rely on un-content-protected component video for high-definition movie playback: not a safe bet over the long haul.

Microsoft just got back to us to clarify the Xbox 360's ability to transmit a digital signal. In short, it can, which means that Microsoft could conceivably release an HDMI cable for the Xbox 360. This is good news, and relieves a great deal of our concern over the Xbox 360's ability to effectively work with 1080p. Microsoft's full response is marked in the Q & A portion of this feature.

With this new information in mind, consider us relatively mollified. A future HDMI cable for the 360 will resolve the problems we outline in our discussion of 1080p compatibility. Let's hope Microsoft decides the market demands it sooner rather than later.
.
.

IGN: Can the X360 send out a digital signal now, or ever?

Microsoft: Xbox 360 currently doesn't include a digital out connection for video. Our platform is flexible enough to allow support of a digital connection in the future should we choose to do so. When the Xbox 360 was being developed HDMI was nascent and with our current connections we support what the overwhelming majority of consumers have available to them. It's important to note that the market penetration of 1080p displays is in the single digits. Regardless, for those early adopters who have displays and projectors that support 1080p over VGA and component we have a solution and it is a free upgrade for them. We are watching the market closely and will continue to evaluate our solution in the face of consumer demand, but have no announcements regarding additional cables or connections.

What output could the calbe connect to? Surely there's nothing with the BW (about 10 Gbps) that can be adapted to an HDMI out.

Netflix in US has an option for HDDVD/Bluray. If you select the high-def format as preferred format and if movie has been released in that format, they send the high-def version.
