Welcome to last year rumours

Haha, nice.
I'm glad it isn't true, the 7990 is probably my least liked AMD card from the 7000 series.

Don't worry, with the PS4 at 8GB, it's only a matter of time. Probably Sony have temporarily driven the price up, otherwise it would probably already have happened. ;) I bet that we'll see 8GB cards somewhere in this world before the year is out.

It's a very nice, solid piece of hardware IMO, it's just that tahiti is so damn power hungry that it throttles easily. I'm more than half considering buying one to stick in a backup PC rig just for use with folding@home... With the rasterizing hardware idle the power draw is much lower and it should not throttle.

The OpenCL version of the next folding GPU core is monstrously sped up on tahiti compared to previous releases, the folding score of a stock radeon 7970GE is roughly within ten percent of a geforce titan...

Are you running beta version then, or is core 17 live now? I haven't seen any such work units yet on my system, all I get are core 15...which should map to Nvidia cuda version; typical that I bought two new geforce 770s just as I read this news! :D Oh well, heh. It doesn't really matter; folding isn't the main purpose of my PC.

Have you seen any news of how core 17 will run on 6970 series cards? I have two unused such boards now which could be nice to put to good use, if I can get decent PPD/watt out of them.

It would have been a 6GB card really anyway. Dual GPU's replicate everything in memory. I think the only 6GB card on the market at the moment is Titan. There was the Saphire 7970GE but it was discontinued, I guess it wasn't very popular. That'll change drastically a year from now.

Core 17 is definitely live, yes. I'm receiving mostly x17 WUs since 1-2 mouths.

Actually, x16 WUs are completely broken with this card or drivers. GPU utilization never exceeds 20 percents and they use up one CPU core completely. With x17 the GPU is used nicely and I can fold on all 8 (Piledriver) cpu cores

I'm folding on (very roughly) 10-15k PPD with my 6850. It's safe to say 6950 will yield at least two times that.

But yeah, would be interesting to know the exact numbers. Or see them compared once more with 5xx generation nVidia cards, for that matter.

Closed because original topic is over as it's realized the news is from 2012 and all that follows is purely off-topic.
