Popup in GR:AW?

I'm wondering if you guys are seeing this too? http://media.putfile.com/grawpopup
I didn't make this video, it's from somebody on the teamxbox forum, but mine is the same way. I find this kind of odd since the IGN review specifically made it a point to say that there's "no pop-up or pop-in of any kind to be seen". Anyway, there's a discussion going on over there, http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=424766 where a lot of people are reporting no popup whatsoever, but there seem to be an almost equal number of people experiencing a lot of it. Weird.

Overagressive visibility culling that returns the occlusion state a frame or two late to prevent flushing the render pipeline when waiting for a result. IMO.

That's fine if it's happening consisitently, but if some people are seeing it and others aren't, then it raises questions.

It does indeed raise questions. Such as why some people experience and some don't.

I'm surprised that the popup is so close to the user also.

Never saw pop up in my game. There was this time where i turned around, and something called to my attention, but i couldn't tell what had happened since it was kinda far way.

It was the only time.

It appears to me that the user is close to exiting the play map which is why the screen goes "wonky". Objects outside the play area (indicated by the shadow) may just be handled differently than objects in the play area.

i have had some very minor pop in happen... but very isolated incidents indeed.

eg i looked round a corner once and then a crate appeared infront of the soldier i could see.

ya there's a little pop-up, but it's not your usual pop-in where as you walk forward stuff appears. it's when you quickly look around a corner or something, and for a split second a big crate or something won't be drawn in, it has nothign to do with the distance.

it's actually come in handy a couple times, spotted enemies who were hiding out. it's very rare though, not a big deal the draw distance is still amazing at all times.

diagnosis is correct, doctor ;)

Some people had mentioned the possibility of certain HDTVs (plasma? LCD?) being more susceptible to some of the anomalies being attributed to pop-up, while others see no such problem.

I have no idea if that is possible, but did see it mentioned elsewhere.

well i'm running rear projection CRT,

really it might come down to playstyle, people who do more popping around corners would probably see it more for example.

I'll argue that the most relevent factor in why there are conficting reports is that most people don't see much of anything but what they want to see; and that goes for the pop-in in GRAW as much as it does for things like low framerate and lack of vsync.

This is the correct assessment. The player is right on the edge of the playable boundries in the game, which dileberately causes graphics problems. If he were to continue trying to walk forward the screen would become completely unrecognizable and then he would fail the mission.

This is a situation caused by an intentional design decision. The graphics problems are there to tell you that you are going the wrong way and leaving the mission map.

Uhm, right. I guess other, less informed people might (incorrectly) choose to describe the issue as a level design glitch...

Well, it was a decent theory before I heard others seeing the pop-in on the play field itself.

Yes, and if they would check their Tactical Map, they would see that the areas that have those problems are off-map.

If it's not on the map, how could it be a "level design glitch"? It's not part of the level.

As a matter of fact, those boxes that are popping up are very much in-play. That building right next to them is the building where you plant the C4 to blow up the antenna. If therealskywolf really did only notice one little insignificant occurance of popup, then something's seriously wrong somewhere, because I have it almost constantly. If I run past a pillar or something, I'll notice all kinds of stuff popping in behind it. I just can't imagine somebody having the same experience I'm having, and writing, "no pop-up or pop-in of any kind to be seen". BTW, I'm playing on an IBM G72 computer monitor.
