Nothing major in the grand scheme of things, but after all the years of raising him it seems like it's enough to warrant a proud Daddy post. ;)

He finished up summer phys ed today and has fulfilled all his requirements, he is now officially a high school graduate and I am feeling a great combination of pride and relief!

That's all, but it's a big happy for me. :)

As a degree-less educational heathen who didn't survive what the system asked of him, I look on in wonder at how it holds together and works. I'm very much in favour of the current trend for online learning, Coursera style, and hope that pans out into a real method for qualified education.

Since we're celebrating these things, my girlfriend finished her degree recently and starts a Masters in Sept. Pride and relief being felt here, too!
Congratulations to her and the very best of luck on her Masters, you got lots of reasons for pride there! :D

I have a BA in Biology with a minor in Health Sciences. Now I work in IT. My degree is worthless to me but the student loan people don't see it that way.

Well, that does sound a bit of a bother yes, but at least now when you see a mollusc, maybe you know which class and order it belongs to...? :)

I got to the very end of my last year of a B.Sc in Computer Science and then quit before crossing the finishing line. I've written about it before, but there are a hell of a lot of, including very specialist, fields where a degree is beneficial but shouldn't be a hard requirement. There are far too many great people out there for whom a traditional education is impossible or not viable for a great many reasons, that industry would be nuts to pass over.

Education, and testing that you have an education (via job interviews mainly) after the fact, are so broken for a good chunk of the populace that I make it a point when I'm hiring to not put too much weight on the degree, or even if the candidate has one (my brightest and most impactful hire at PowerVR so far doesn't have one).

Having gone through a typical Bay Area interview process recently, plus the process I went through to join PowerVR, and BT before that...hiring is just fucked up across the board, at least as far as I've been able to observe it.

Edit: sorry for the off-topic, it's just something I feel strongly about!

End of the secondary school and 6th form process, in our money.

No but know how to properly hold someone up when they're doing a kegstand.

Ah, I see. Well, they don't teach that at universities around here, so if you ever feel like emigrating, your knowledge would be unique! ;)

I'll come over and interview you if you like. I'd like to see how it rates. ;-)

Congrats to all! I am starting a new job on Monday myself, after 8.5 years in my previous job. Back to full-time programming, which I'm very excited about. Hope I can keep up with the youngsters ... :) (no, not games programming for now ... )

Not working at PVR anymore? What was behind your decision to leave?[/QUOTE]
