[PC] Grand Theft Auto IV

Textures on high is very pretty indeed, but if I want high textures, I have to scale back the viewing distance. Since I haven't played much lately due to my problems, I'm not sure which I prefer ATM.

I am in love with the game! The first GTA that I like! I have never been a GTA fan before.

But the latest patch just broke the game for me :( !
The pop-ups are gone now, which were nagging me really badly earlier, but the frame rate drops from 30-35 to 9-11 Fps in a minute or two of playing the game ! Is this some kind of memory problem that has comein with the new patch?
I used to play fine earlier, but now, after this patch, the game starts with around 30 fps, but drops o pretty much single digits very quickly. I just played around 3 missions and they were pretty much slideshows :( !
WTF!!!!!

Yeah that happens to me sometimes as well (although I think it did it before the latest patch as well). Takes a bit longer to happen when i'm playing though. After 40 mins or so I reckon. And not all the time either... wierd!

It happens all the time to me and Rockstar support haven't answered my last 3 emails. I am getting annoyed.

Benches game me same results +/- 2fps. Though I still get the RAM filled up within 20mins as GTAIV eats up all RAM until the pagefile is the only "RAM" left. here hoping hoping my new 4890 1GB alt 4870 2GB and 4GB extra RAM will keep it floating for 2-4hours!

Nebula, can you post your settings/tweaks and what fps are you getting ?

Thanks. ;)

Here are my settings and some screenshots of different places with framerate. Also I edited time cycle file to have 2xdefault max draw distance to be able to see the whole city from any spot. Mostly it is 30-35fps, up in the sky it is 40fps or more. In hotspots with lots of cars and detail it can dip down to 25fps but the dips in more detailed parts tend to be around 27-28fps at worst, usually. In combat and in large open areas with lots of details, cops etc and several upclose explosions it can dip down to 20-25fps. Otherwise regular intensive combats with explosions are around 25-30fps and in smalelr size ~30fps.

And some extra tweaks for less aggressive LOD and more detail for cars at dsitance and pedestrians.

# Lod distances for vehicles
car.lod.distance.high 20.00
car.lod.distance.low 80.00

# Lod distances for peds
ped.lod.distance.high 40.00
pedincar.lod.distance.high 20.00

misc.Multiplier.heightStart 0 (I set it to 0 to be able to get the benefit of 2xdraw dsitance set in timecyc.dat (3000))

And also slight offset for DOF which can be seen in screenshots but not so noticable when playing. The benefit is improved depth at distance and jaggie smoothing!

Screenshots and settings menu with framerate counter.

But you guys are talking about 20-40 mins of playing before it falls to single digit fps, but with me its 2 or 3 mins . It happened to me only after this patch !

You have 2GB RAM?

The time for me actually depended on how much of the city I had explored. The more the faster the RAM was eaten up. Now with 8GB of RAM and 1GB of VRAM the game just have to go down on all it's four and surrender.

We, PC gamers always have to count for overhead of lousy ports. :D

So true it hurts.

I think I need to reset my GTAIV settings as I am getting worse perfomance. And if I slide the view distance slider to 1% I get a VRAM limit warning and can't pull up detail distance past 20% (746MB used). That despite physical VRAM being 1024 and faked for game to look like 2GB.

This game is borked.

i've barely played this game. i still don't have a gun! i think i started my first (this) game when it came out. i just finished fear3 (took weeks!), and thought i was going to get back to this. but now im considering replaying crysis (#1) only while cheating. nothing wrong with this game (cept maybe the cell phone ringin all the time)

I have 4gb of Ram, but what troubles me is that this didn't happen to me before :???:!
So, u telling me the game doesn't flush out data from the RAM at all? But that means If I go back to an area I have explored, atleast that should run fine, but the FPS stays in single digits anywhere I go.

Anyways, I'll try to uninstall this patch. I can, right:???: ?

Strange. You know, I bought a 4890 with 1Gb VRAM and upped the system RAM to 8GB and the game ran worse. I got loading sttutering right from start, worse framerate and several parts where the framerate would go down to ~10fps when previously it was 30fps.

Heck even with medium textures it was the same. So I just thought f* it and changed the LOD for pedestrians and cars to show detail even further away. Lo and behold my fps went up by a fair bit, the stuttering gone and no framerate killer spots anymore. And sure teh improved graphcis is visible but wtf.. since when does a game run better with more to render?

This game engine is borked. They need to fix it or rather should have done it before instead of a goofy engine/port.

Dunno I dont think so. Might try to patch it with previous patch to see if that fixes the problems. Hey might keep some other fixes from latest patch!

Yups ! I agree. After applying this tweak, the game actually looks good! Its playable now, has a decent motion blur(Thank God ) and the jaggies are less visible due to the DOF now. Its amazing how a small amount of motion blur adds so much speed to the driving ! I think I'll move on with the missions now. mI had left this game midway due to the horrible port job, but now it is playable. Also I got my ps3 controller working in GTA IV :D ! Woohoo ! (Thoughthe D-pad is still not recognised my Dead SPace )

Thanks I'll try the tweak. Im still not off the first island. only recently got a gun. im on a mission where i have to wack everyone in a bar.
