OG XBox was planned to launch with an AMD CPU until last minute.

I was playing MOH:Frontline on OG Xbox last night and was wondering if the slowdown was CPU related or not as it can happen when there's not a lot going on on screen.

It's still stupidly better performing then PS2 version which I played for the first time since the game released, never realised back then how horrendous the frame rate is. Easily low teens in places and always feels like it's under 30fps most of the time.

Now that you can HDMI mod PS2, Xbox and GC I would love to see a DF style channel comparing that generation as it would be super interesting.

The thing with PS2, especially if you didn't play a Dreamcast or PC first, is that if you compare it to PS1 it was a big upgrade. But there are only, what 2 or 3 3d games on PS1 that attempted 60fps. Most of them were capped at 30, or 24 or some crap, and the twitchy polygons might have made it look even lower at times. I personally think most of the year one PS2 software wasn't that great, be it from learning new exotic hardware or perhaps coming from the days of 24fps being acceptable. Dreamcast had the advantage of having much of it's library be 60fps versions of PS1/N64 games and 1st party games from a company used to making fast arcade games. MOH: Frontline on Xbox and Gamecube came out almost year after the PS2 release IIRC, and was much more polished overall and even included multiplayer. It's been a while since I played the PS2 version but I remember the texture filtering being very poor as well. Like maybe some surfaces are point sampled or something. But it might just be excessive shimmering caused by a lack of mipmaps.

The PS2 had the disadvantage of being designed much earlier, due to exotic hardware/own design etc, they probably started way before 1998 already. Whilest MS just gather the latest off the shelf parts.
PS2 had the advantage though in software and theres where it shines. Devs worked hard to get every bit of power out of that console, and some games really showed that, looking really good for the hardware. When the same energy was put into the xbox it stood out comfortably over the PS2, but it never saw the same amount of AAA games/software attention.

There's actually way more then that.
Are there? I know Crime Killers is, and Tobal I think, then maybe Ray Tracers. And Possibly Omega Boost. People say that is, and it feels pretty responsive but it has this motion blur or something that always makes me feel like the frames exist longer than 16.6ms. And I guess Tobal 2 could be, but that game never came out in my region so I always forget it, and I'm not even sure it's a 60fps title.

A Google search shows over 100.

Rapid Racer, all Tekken games, Tobal 2, Ergheiz, Dead or Alive, Klonoa, and Bloody Roar are all games I can confirm were 60fps from personal experience.
These of course were below that framerate in the PAL region.

Regarding Omega Boost, I have that game but I never understood what framerate it is running.

Cool. I would have never guessed Klonoa was 60hz, although I haven't played it in years. Ergeiz and DOA, though, forgot about those two. And Rapid Racer, not sure I ever played it because my mind went immediately to Dead in the Water. Totally different game.

Even I can think of genuine 60fps 3D games that you've not even mentioned.
If only you could share that list with the group instead of just saying that there are more.

Rascal was also 60fps now that I remember. That was technically very impressive but boring in gameplay and art
I think this one was also one of the high res games on the PS1

To be honest I remember a lot of games that were 60fps on PS2 when it first launched. I think the PS2 was a good contender in the framerate department early in it's life
And some of them were darn impressive and large budget games.
It is much later that games started to perform at 30fps when the devs were trying to push the hardware more.
The DC had a huge amount of arcade ports which is one of the reasons why it had so many 60fps games.

Yeah, that's what I was saying. Coming off the PS1 you had all these games running at low resolution and low framerates, PS2 was a big upgrade.

I remember seeing Burnout 2 for the first time....couldn't believe it was running on PS2 at the locked 60fps.

But I suppose that PS2, GC and OG Xbox were stupidly powerful for their given resolution target.

I dont think so. In special not the PS2 which thrived best at lower resolutions. Not any of the 6th gen where suited for 720p otherwise.

They were released during the CRT era where 480i was the maximum resolution they were aiming for (Well except for a few Xbox games) so 720p has nothing to do with the 6th generation.

And for 480i they were stupidly overpowered and much more powerful in relation to their target resolution then other console generation that followed.
